Posts: 1245 Location: Madtown, WI | Tuffy's question on the smell of his new bait got me thinking again along the same lines. I personally thing 90% of the time smell does not matter one bit. BUT, what about those times the fish are right on the bait and looking like they are trying to "taste" the bait...you KNOW they are SOOOOO close to committing but just can't trip them. The question is, and I have asked myself many times....if I had a scent on the bait, would that had been enough to push that fish over the edge???? I think they are trying to determine if it is food...and maybe that little hint of smell could trip there little brains to say "FOOD!"... In Canada this year I had several opportunities to experience long drawn out follows/tasters/non-committers....and I really wish I had some scent to play with at those times because I think it may have made the difference. Anyone else do this type of experiementing??? I think I may pick up some scent and give it a try if I am experiencing a lot of this... Cory

As I stated in Tuffy's post if it is the little bit that puts them over the edge or the straw that breaks the camels back, that makes them commit then why not? I would use it more often if I wasn't so lazy, but how can you not use it on a fish that has followed your lure many times. Time to give him that little extra sales pitch to get the bite. I heard a saying once long time ago and don't remember where or the exact words but it was somthing like.. Biologists say that Pike don't have a sense of smell but fisherman know better.. Evolution would slowly get rid of the nose/olfactory senses if it wasn't needed or usefull. You can bet they can smell and probably better than we think. Remember that smell kinda like sound travels way better in water than in air because of the density.

Posts: 3926 | Gander sells this new stuff, "TurboGrease" that has the consistency of Vasoline. Sticky as, well, Vasoline. I put it on my cranks and it sure hasn't hurt my numbers. Night fishing with Jakes, DDDs and DepthRaiders has been great for me. Of course, all my favorite baits are now slippery and hard to sharpen.

Posts: 1939 Location: Black Creek, WI | Cory, I've discussed this exact same scenario with many of my fishing partners over the years as well. The general concensus is exactly what you conclude.... that those fish MIGHT be trying to get a taste/smell for confirmation that is is real meal.... so it can't hurt to try the stuff. My LOTW partner experimented with scent when we encountered those repeated chasers, nippers, yet never committers situations and seemed to have some success. However, once he switched to a different kind of scent... his success dwindled. We will never know for sure. One word of caution.... do not SPILL any scent on the floor of your shiny Tuffy. The stuff reacts with the carpet glue and your carpet eventually comes off/loose. It also doesn't wash out once you spill it... so don't just plan on a clean up plan. I should know... my partner spilled a full GALLON of the crap on my rear casting deck!!!! Those darn marinated reef hawgs...... jlong

Posts: 3242 Location: Racine, Wi | Good question Cory. What scents out there are y'all using. (I've been seeing too many Mikie and Mauser posts.) The bait I was using I dumped in the livewell with the suckers to soak up a little different scent for what it was worth.

Posts: 1939 Location: Black Creek, WI | I haven't purchased any scents myself... so don't recall the name brands or flavors (scents). All I can tell you is that the stuff that seemed to work smelled like rotten fish and the stuff that didn't work as well smelled like black licorice. I think the carpet killer was the black licorice smelling junk. We've also experimented with stripping every pike we catch of its slime and soaking lures in a livewell full of it.... but the down-side to that is painfully obvious. Its a fun thing to try in your FRIENDS boat... not yours (ha ha). jlong

Posts: 32958 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | The Muskie's sense of smell is pretty poor, so I don't worry much about scent.
