I posted a question like this one in FISHING REPORTS, but then thought it better suited for this forum so I apologize if you are reading this for the 2nd time. I am fishing a small lake up around Sturgeon Falls (Lake Nipissing), Ontario during the 2nd week of September with my dad and uncle. Its a fairly shallow lake, usually 5-15 feet deep with 2 spots reaching 20' and 45'. We usually get the best action fishing shallow in the bays with weeds being a problem a lot of the times. What lures do you recommend for fishing like this. We have found that burning bucktails works great and the topraider has been huge in the past. I would like to use more crankbaits, but they need to be able to run very shallow. Any recommendations? I will be puting in my shopping order soon and would any feedback you could give. This week is great for all the guys in theh family to get together and fish and you know there is always some wagering (and heckling) about who is having the better week. Thanks in advance for you help.

Shallow Depth Raider, Little Jakes, and Slammer 7". Twitch these baits over, in, and around the weeds, and you'll have a grand time. Gregger would have you throwing Bluegill colored baits, but I am fond of Perch and Firetiger.

Ohio Hunter...my favorite (as of right now!) shallow running crankbait is the SS Shad.

these cranks can be casted really shallow. plus the a very boyant...it's pretty easy to cast them over top of weeds, even when only having 8 inches to 20 inches of water. they are a good twitch bait and good when just retrieved.'
Kyle makes one heck of bait and his paint jobs are sweet. the SS shad has put quite a few big fish in the boat.

These bait runs VERY SHALLOW (as far as cranks go). check one out, i think you'll like it.

Put a 7.5"/19cm floating bumblebee Zalt (11) in your arsenal. Then just have the net ready. This has been a serious muskie producer for me. twitch-twitch-pause-jerk-pause- twitch-twitch......... It also has produced some nice pike. Also a floating parrot Zam(06), holoform walleye floating Zam(54) or spotted perch Zam 33)are good choices.

But here again I'm prejudiced.

Big walleye's really like the #33 spotted perch- believe it or not both casting and twitching across the cabbage tops and flatline trolled (4-5mph).

These are just a couple of many canadian fish I've caught on a spotted perch (#33) floating Zam I friend has scored a 40" (2003) & 42" (2004) pike on same lure, plus numerous others. Note the different weather conditions- The blue bird day fish was flatline trolling in 15-20' of water. The rainy day was casting twitching over cabbage tops in 4-6 ft of water.

Use a ~14" 80lb flourocarbon leader- the walleyes don't care and the pike/muskies can't bite through it.

Here's some good photo's of some #11 7.5" Zalt fish caught in 2003 by a WI Muskie fisherman who has also become a Zalt #11 fanatic..
