Posts: 3242 Location: Racine, Wi | My old motor was fine when I trolled in that it would stay straight. The motor I have now, always wants to turn one way or another. It is real loose on its axis. (don't know what else to call it.) Anyone know what I need to tighten to keep it more stable? And to keep it from swinging to either side. Also, it does it when I am casting, it will just "fall" to one side or the other. I like to use it as a keel, and when it turns, it is a pain. Thanks!

Posts: 5874 | On my old Tuffy, I had a Merc Tiller that did the same thing. There was an adjustment on the side of the housing. Seems over time, the friction pads wore out, and would have been hundreds to replace, as the whole deal had to be taken apart. Merc had a kit for an external tension adjust that bolted on, and was about $40 dollars. I wonder if OMC had the same thing for yours? If not, perhaps a bunzai cord on each side, with just the right tension to hold it centered, yet still allow you to turn it. hehehe What happened to your old motor?

Posts: 3242 Location: Racine, Wi | I was thinking of the whole bungee thing, but that is a little too redneck even for me. lol My old one is up at the inlaws. It didn't have power trim, so I swaped while power trim is put on the other. I hope to get it back by the end of the year, but who knows. They had to get the trim fixed that they were gonna put on the other motor first. I'll just have to make due I guess.

Posts: 1335 Location: Chicago, Beverly | I know my 40hp evinrude with T&T has some sort of adjustment(that I never use) to tighten the steering, not sure if my 25hp johnson without T&T has it..

Posts: 80 | My 50 Evinrude tiller has a bolt that you tighten located at the base of the motor near the swivel point. Occasionally it will loosen up, and I just tighten it down again. Only takes about an 1/8 to a 1/4 turn to tighten it up....

Posts: 2515 Location: Waukesha & Land O Lakes, WI | I made a "U" from wood and used a huge chunk of Velcro to hold it in place....This worked on my old Alumacraft Dominator with a 40 hp tiller after the tension tab quit. Check out the illustration I made.....it worked great for trolling. NOTE: the "U" was only high enough to hold the tiller bar, you dont want one too high or it will throw off the center of gravity and become too tippy. Posts: 4266 | I've got a 75 Mariner tiller, and there is a plasic wing nut on the side away from the throttle with a rod running through it. I can tighten the wing nut so that the motor won't move from side to side, or I can loosen it to make steering easier. There should be a tension device on your motor somewhere. Call the dealer that you bought it from if you can't find it. I know Mercs and Mariners have them, I don't know why every other manufacturer wouldn't have one. Beav

Posts: 5874 | Beav, That deal on yours is called a CoPilot, believe it or not. I added that to the Merc 25 on my old Tuffy, when the tensioner on the motor wore out, and was too expensive to repair. I'm sure there is a tensioning device on the Johnson, too. ANd it may also be worn out.

Posts: 3242 Location: Racine, Wi | Thanks guys for all the insite. I will be monkeying around with this on Sat. I took a look, and there is a screw near the base of the motor, that has a spring on it. I will see if that is what I am looking for, or if it is something I shouldn't monkey with. Otherwise I will hire a really small person that doesn't take up alot of room to hold it straight. LOL
