| What do you do in these situations.
1)When a muskie does the "Gater Death roll" looking right at you. I lost a 46" yesterday that did this to me, two feet from the net.
2)When a muskie charges the boat head out of the water doing the open "Jowel head shake".

| Mostly, I stare in abject disbelief, as the muskie rolls or headshakes it's way free of the hooks, and then continue on...I lost the biggest Muskie I have ever had stuck on a roaring across the top of the water head shake that rocketed the Undertaker she ate 15 feet...Tried to keep the line tight......No pat answer from me, that is for sure![:((] |

| Don't know if there's much you can do, been there several times this year.
Had'em hiting Cobb's earlier this year and just charging the boat, head shaking. I couldn't reel fast enough..Thought about jumping out the other side of the boat and pulling the slack up that way...[]
I usually swear allot..[:0] then shake my head and smile...that's what keeps us coming back[:praise:]

| Sometimes there isn't a thing you can do to save a fish from getting off but here is what helps me.
1- I think the only thing to help with rolling fish is to have a lose drag and to let the fish roll. Any extra tention on the line might cause you to pull the hooks out. You kinda have to bow to the fish just as if it was jumping. But make sure to keep a little tention so the lure doesn't fall out. And remember to be very smooth when landing the fish so not to cut your line with hooks or teeth.
2- Same thing here, it is very important to have a lose drag so not to pull the hooks out of the fish. A fast action and limber rod helps in this situation. I don't see this behavior last a long time from fish far away from the boat but most big girls tend to do this to me as they are going around the boat. I also make sure to keep the rod up high and over the fish and pray to god that she doesn't get off. My best casting memory is from twin 54s who did this to me one right after the other for several minutes as they went around the boat several times. I think I like this behavior now but at the time all I was doing while walking around the boat was saying no no no no as they were shaking their huge heads out of the water with their mouths and gills wide open. [] I will cherrish that night forever, just writing about it give me an adranalin rush.[:p] |

| Now do exact as I say if this happens.......
First, Grab your outboard firmly with both hands.
Secondly, proceed to bang your head on the motor until:
A. you fall in the lake
B. Loss consciousness.
Do this enough and you will forget about the lost fish....may forget your name too but that is just a side effect.

| I guess my question to the oringinal question is WHY does this seem to happen more in the colder fall water?Just seems that way to me!Can`t answer though? Jeff |
|

|
| Jason,
This happened to me a few times this fall. I cannot understand why they do this. I lost 2 fish last month with the famous roll and another fish rolled and somehow hooked himself in the side when the hook came free of his mouth.
I have not had a fish jump past last september as well. Is this because because most of these fish have come from deeper water?

| Hi,
I think they roll in cold water more just because everything they do is slower (I LOVE seeing them fight in 'slow motion' in cold water...)
If they are facing dead at you, isn't a lot you can do, but, in general, they reall roll when you put pressure on them. Ease off and baby them, especially at the boat when you are lifting up on them - that seems like they point when they really like to spin. Back off a little, and they roll a lot less...

| Jason -
On the "Death roll" I will try to pull the fish forward
lightly by walking around the boat, maintaining line
tension. This action at least minimizes the chance the
fish will roll-up the line around it's body /head
or whatever. In my experience(not that I'm some guru)the fish just seem to not want roll as much when moving .
Now , the tail surfin' maw shakin' torpedo - PhTtTt
He## I don't know ! Reel Like a fiend ? and pray to
the fishing Gods to be kind and merciful.

| I had a northern of 72cm do that to me in Ireland. that sucker took a 7" suick speeded up to the boat and launched itself at me. Because it was slapping its tail against the side of the boat while jumping, he managed to jump into my boat. I only had to pick him up and unhook him. Sucker!!![] |

|
| WELL, you saw my reaction....generally I swear a bit, curse the fish, proclaim the I hate muskie fishing, proclaim that I suck.....then I smoke a cigarrette and will eventually lose another fish in the next few hours. And then repeat the process again and again and again....5X on Sunday, though only 2 of them I really cared about. But that one that did the head shake behind the boat I REALLY WANTED!!!

| When a fish comes out of the water I put the rod tip in the water to try and keep the fish down. A fish can shake it's head much quicker out of the water then in it. As for the rolling I haven't had this much, maybe because my drags are not screwed down tight. When a fish gets close to the boat I like to steer and pull them. I put them where I want them. Maybe if you keep them going forward they will not roll. |
