| Hi,has anyone fished the Black river south of Black River Falls dam down to the Mississippi?I am going to meet my Dad in Onalaska this weekend and that is close to where it dumps in to the Mississippi and want to fish Muskies with him.I have heard that it is for smaller boats or canoes. The prospect sounds better than Bluegills on Lake Onalaska, any info would help .Thanx KD |

| I have fished the Black River a few times. You wont find Muskie anywhere south of Melrose. From the city of Black River Falls south to Melrose this river holds muskie, some very good sized. I usually put in at the state park about 3 miles south of Black River Falls and fish up stream. Right at the boat launch just north is a nice rock area, lost a nice fish there. Continue up stream and fish the eddys and rock. I use a 14' boat which is perfect for this river. Not sure if a longer boat would do very well here. Chartruse and black bucktails and orange and black bucktails. Have always wanted to put in at Melrose and fish up stream, havent tried that yet, but Melrose is a lot closer to LaCrosse than Black River Falls. Good luck. If you fish it, give us a report. Location: Mauston, Wisconsin | Kd- Lake Onalaska may surprise you. I haven't seriously fished the La Crosse/ Onalaska area since ~ 1984. At that time there were quite few tiger muskies being caught from the blackriver watershed. ( Most Illegally while season was closed- Old Style Northern Pike & Walleye Tournament.) I filed a written complaint with the tournament sponsers/officials. I have caught & released tiger muskie as far south as Goose Island. Is it what I'd call a fishable population - No! But perhaps some of the local Muskie guys can provide some insight ( LaCrosse Chapter of Muskies Inc.) Onalaska has or had some really terrific pike fishing- +20 lbs was not unusual. That may have changed over the years.
If you really want Muskies it may be better to fish above Melrose. Lake Onalsaka can be a killer in bad storms/high winds- be carefull.
Have fun
Al
