| anyone know of where we can get more realistic colors and good wood to make it out of... me and my cousins are jsut beginners. thanks guys

Location: Holly, MI | I used hardwood dowels for my trolling baits and cedar for my body baits. No special paints used for me. I just used regular spray can paint from Wally mart. If you start layering your paints finish up with a gold or silver sprayed thru a mesh for a scale look. Check out a few I made..
Added.. The firetiger and firebass I made from using a sharpie marker for the stripes. Components are available from a lot of places but use only stainless screws. Pre drill your holes or you will split your wood. I superglued in the lips after all painting was done then added a thin coat of epoxy for final finish.

Location: Holly, MI | Thanks. Check out Divani's site for some super lures( forgot the site name, Help Divani). Mesh like from a sewing shop for veils or whatever, empty bag from onions or oranges makes bigger scales. Be sure to put a white base coat of paint first to show your true colors. Flourescent paints hold their color much deeper than regular paints on deep divers. Baiscs like this.. White all over then say yellow all over, then green from the top for the back , then orange from botttom for belly, then mesh and gold for scales. The hardest part is waiting for the paint to dry!! I'm not kidding, you'll see. I put a screw eye or two in to hold the bait while spraying and to hang it from to dry. Have fun with them. The upside down perch has a bunch of holes drilled in it then I added sinkers until it slowly sank, fill in the holes with glue and paint away. The cedar was lying around but can be bought in like 3/4 inch thick pieces for cedar siding from the lumberyard they or home depot etc will have the hardwood dowels. I have a lathe at my dads to turn the blanks but they could be carved I guess. For the body baits I cut out my shape from the rough sawn cedar and then went for a ride on the belt sander until I liked what I saw.

What type of wood is that little crank? I've been wanting to tinker with some smaller Bagley type baits that are built better. I guarantee that my paint jobs will all be jailbirds with different contrasting colors. No artist here. lol

Athletic bags that hold like 20 footballs from gym class are also great for making scale patterns. |

Location: Holly, MI | Divani, The crackle paint was on the shelf at Wall Mart. You got those? You must, I even saw the pic of one on Mars. Craft stores have the stuff also. People use them to make old looking furnature and picture frames etc. It can be bought and is recomended by the paint manufacturer (duh, buy more of my product) in two seperate cans. If you can find it not packaged together, the second coat (crackling part) was all I bought. I sprayed it right over regular paint and it still cracked good. The thicker you spray it the larger the cracks will be. Experiment on som scrap first before goofin up your lure.
The little crank is Cedar. I just jigsawed out a rough shape then sanded it. Belt sander takes years off hand sanding or carving. All are experimental and some have worked much better than others. The little crank swims great and will even hold up to trolling speed. |
