Posts: 929 Location: Rhinelander. | with many bass and walleye anglers finding success with red hooks wondering if anyone has tried them for muskie. If so what do you think. If you have not tried them wondering what your thoughts are also. Don Pfeiffer

Posts: 2515 Location: Waukesha & Land O Lakes, WI | I've been using them on a trial basis and so far I have'nt noticed a bit of difference...I've been on clear and fogged water....nada. Have'nt tried them on my spinners yet though. There's a dye out that works really well, Renualure. Maybe worth the 2.99 or so to try.

Posts: 110 Location: Albertville, Minnesota | I purchased and used a Big Kahuna Bucktail with red hooks. I campare it to buchertail I have with almost the same colors (Black/white with silver blade). Caught one muskie on the red hooked Kahuna compared to 4 on the buchertail (same lake all different times). So far this year, used it at a minimum with no success. Just my opinion but I don't think it makes too much difference unless they can pick it out better or something. Chris

Posts: 1335 Location: Chicago, Beverly | YES, I have tried them and YES they work great... However, mine are not the metalic red ones you see all over.. Mine are Custom ones painted by Luretech of Altoona Wi with the Power Glow Paint they are famous for(walleye fisherman may know them for their "HotHooks" and Crappie fisherman know them for their Hot Legs, Tiny Tot and Peg leg jigs, he also makes Mama Bait spinnerbaits and Musky Mugger spinnerbaits ).. He did a limited 1 time run of 100 for me in '98... Though he did tell me it was a one of thing I have been begging for many more ever since.. If you use the Metalic Red ones, things to keep in mind are: since they don't glow don't use them on deep divers unless water is absolutely gin clear, murky water isn't the best for them either, if you can't see your bait, then the fish most likely will not see your hooks..

Posts: 8 Location: Champlin, MN | My question is why does red hooks work so well for walleyes? I beleive it was Cajun Line that stated their red colored fishing line is best because it disappears under water. The fish can't see the line. But, they claim for red hooks is to resemble injured bait. Which is right?

Posts: 2754 Location: Mauston, Wisconsin | Don- I've used the VMC blood red's for ~ 1 year. Can't say as to whether they make a significant difference for muskies- seem to put more walleyes in the boat though. They do look cool coming through the water. I'd guess I'm at about 50/50 for muskies. MT Net - I don'y buy the red line disappearing underwater. Any scuba diver can tell you that red changes to black/dark grey depending on the shade of red and depth- It changes in the first three feet of the water column. There are some good threads on color and fish camoflauge in the Muskie Research section. Re. Walleyes - I think the red makes the hooks stand out more, i.e., visually to the fish. Therefore they see the movement of the hooks better. Maybe it enhances the lure appearance, i.e., as moving fins. I have also caught muskies and small mouths on them. Have fun Edited by ESOX Maniac 6/23/2004 11:07 AM

Posts: 1335 Location: Chicago, Beverly | Here is a link to an article about Painted Hooks by Walleye pro Bill Reabe: http://www.walleyecentral.com/reabe-hooks.htm (Hawg Wild of Altoona Wi is now known as Luretech). This is the line in the article that makes all the difference between Luretech's and all the imatations: "Since his paint is not a fluorescent paint but is actually powered by ultraviolet it will stay glowing under water during the day and even at night if its a clear night and there are stars out." You CAN see red painted hooks at most any depth when they are Power Glow. I don't have a pic of what his hooks look like, but its the same paint as his blades.. (Those are teeth marks in the willow blade) Edited by kevin 6/23/2004 7:35 PM Attachments ---------------- ![]()

Posts: 4266 | I've taken some of the hooks that I use on the front of some of my gliders and cranks and tied a small bunch of red mairibou feathers on them . It looks awesome when the baits pause. I've caught fish on them, but can't give the credit to the red breathing action on the front of the lure. Beaver
