I was out fishing with my Dad last night, and we were using surface baits for the most part. (accept for the washing of the cerimonial bulldawg.)
Anyway, we were fishing on a flat, and I turn around to look at my dad's topraider coming in, and 15' from the boat is an owl, with wings completely open, talens extended, 5' over his bait!!!!! I wish I had time to grab the camera. My dad pulled the bait faster and out of the way, and the owl stayed with it for another second, then saw us, and soared away. That was SWEET!!!! Thank God we didn't hook it, but it was cool to see.

Anyone else have some crazy critters try to attack your baits?

I had a Bald Eagle swoop at a spinnerbait 3 times during casts while the bait was in the air.. the 1st time he did it I had to stop the bait short so he would not get it..the next two he did not get as low, more of just a curiousity thing the next two times.. I also had a Heron land in my boat and try and grab the same brand of spinnerbait out of the boat...

Had a heron land in the water on opening day, (like a duck) right behind my spinnerbait, and take a couple of good whacks at it... thankfully I was able to pull it out of reach.

I've had sea gulls take runs at my baits on occasion. Had a dog jump off of a dock and chase a bait once too. The wildest was a snapping turtle (of about 35-to 40 pounds) that took a snap at a daredevle when I was bass fishing some years ago. It was bad enough news that he impaled the lure into the side of its head... the badder news was that I was fishing out a rubber dinghy at the time, and didn't dare to get too close to try to extricate the hook.

A friend of mine had an osprey take a dive at a jerkbait a few years back. Another friend had a large lamprey following his crankbait at boatside.

Regards,

Had a loon follow a crankbait and through a fig 8, I thought it was a huge fish until it surfaced and flew away

I had a Bald Eagle attack my Top Raider on a portage only lake in Canada...Thank goodness it didn't seal the deal!

I had a Muskrat grab a jig and Minnow, held on right to the boat. Little fella let go and floated on his back right next to us....could have swore he was flipping me off! He was yelling and screaming as he swam off. They sound very very humanlike.

I often have curious loons case spinners too.

last week we were fishing one day on White Sand in Vilas Co. - very clear water. there were some loons in the area, but nothing we payed much attention to...until i look down at the sucker we're dragging to see this black and white torpedo shooting towards it under the water. DOH! the loon managed to grab the sucker and start to swim away with it twice before we got it in. thank goodness it didn't get hung up on the quick-strike rig.
we left the sucker floating just barely in the water next to the boat and it drove the loon nuts - circling and circling all around the boat (both above and below water). we eventually flipped him a dead 8" sucker, which he turned and swallowed in one gulp. i've got pics of him surfacing 5' away from our boat...wild.

Loons are very very curious critters.

The last 2 winters, I've been doing alot more icefishing on the lake we're on up in Land O Lakes. I've been noticing that the Bald Eagles have been staying longer and longer each winter. They look for hand outs, so we usually feed them dead minnows, perch and northerns.....they never get bold enough to hand feed, but they have gotten within 4 feet of us.

I've also seen Wolves on the ice too looking for freebies.

Had a painted turtle chase a 5" Slammer all the way to boat. I resisted the urge to Figure-8 @ boatside, though.

Bats man. Pitch black on a Canadian shield lake, make the cast and darn near get your lure intercepted before it reaches the water.

I've caught several seagulls when trolling Thin-Fins on Lake Michigan.
Like having a living kite.
Releasing them unharmed is a little tough to do

I got a seagull once pier casting for salmon. Put up a decent fight for a few minutes, onlookers liked it too. My fishing partner had a bunch of carp follows the other night casting big bucktails.
