Location: Toronto On | I will be fishing my first musky season at the beginning of June. I have my rod and reel and a
few baits. My main concern is my line. The fellow that sold the reel to me left some kind of line
named musky braid or musky line. It is basically a superline. I was told that I should fish a mono
leader with that line, if that's the case, what type of knot should I use? Should I use a swivel to
attach the length of mono? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Location: St. Louis, MO., Marco Is., FL, Nestor Falls, ON | It sounds like the rod and reel are used. If so, take all the line off, spool 17 lb. test mono on the reel. Leave enought room to put 100 yds of PowerPro 65 lb. test on. Use a uni to uni knot to join the two lines. Tie the line to a quality titanium leader (at least 50 lb. test). Use a Palomar knot to tie the super line onto the leader. You're good to go. Here is a website to learn how to tie the above knots:

What type of baits are you going to throw? I, and most I know, will use different leaders for different baits. For example, I use solid wire leaders for jerkbaits, and some top water. I used to use Titainium leaders for Bucktails, but now use Flourocarbon. I don't believe there is one leader that works for every bait, and style of presentation. I mess around, and end up using what works for me. Some use snaps, some use split rings on the bait and no snaps on the leader. What ever works for you. |

If you are just starting out I feel compelled to pass on a few words of wisdom. I started a couple of years ago and I learned a lot my first year about what not to do through trial and error, but mostly error. First, use a good line like suggested above. Learn how to tie a Palomar knot. You don't have to buy the super expensive titanium leaders, but don't buy the cheap ones either. I like the ones that Thorne Brothers sell. I haven't had one fail yet. Learn to sharpen your hooks. This is very important. Your hooks can not be sharp enough. I have not found a bait that comes with hooks that are sharp enough. Spend time learning how to control your boat and how to keep it on the prime spots.
I lost a lot of fish and baits my first year due to poor line, poor knots, poor leaders and dull hooks. These are pretty much the key things that it took me a year of fishing to really appreciate how important they are. Good luck and stick a big one.
