Just an update to let everyone know what is going on with MuskieFIRST and OutdoorsFIRST sites.

1. Our ISP approx 3 weeks ago switched to SPRINT as their provider of network services. This is what has caused the poor performance - they keep losing their connection, and when it is up, it is obviously oversubscribed as demonstrated by the sloooow download speeds. They thought they were upgrading, and they got burned along with their customers (us). No real fault of theirs, they are great people but it doesn''t change the situation nonetheless.

2. To prevent future problems, MuskieFIRST today acquired a dedicated T1 line and all the networking components to host the site "in house". We now have our own facility.

3. When the router, switch (next week), and servers (approx 1.5 weeks) arrive the sites will be transferred. We will announce this change as the date approaches, but the performance should let you know when it happens as well. Until then we will all have to suffer, but it will be worth the wait. I will be wiring the facility next week so it is ready for the arrival of the servers.

We''re not going anywhere, we are in for the long haul.

Thanks for hanging in there!

Zach

I don't have a refresh button, I just have a "less stale" botton from using it so much!

Zach,

Despite complaints by a few, don't forget we're all musky fishermen here. If we didn't have paitence....yikes. When the site's slow I think of it as one of those days I had a follow but no takers. When I can't get on at all it's just another fishless day. Happens more often, in a real days fishing, than most would like to admit. Once you get everything up and running this again will be THE PLACE for guaranteed sucess.

While you are in the spending mood, don't forget the battery and diesel back up generators.

Quick update for anyone interested, the database server arrived today, and we are in the process of configuing the box and transferring much of the site data over to the new machine. The web server is due in tomorrow. As soon as both machines are ready we'll flip the switch.

I'd say we are less that a week away. We're getting there.

Another quick update. The network is up and running, everything is looking good. The due date for my block of IP''s is the 26th, so the switch will occur around that date. Good news is the current setup seems to have been slightly less troublesome over the weekend, maybe that will hold until the switch.

On a side note, I have been testing chat servers here internally all weekend. We WILL have chat running sometime this fall, just not sure which one yet. I definitely have a couple of favorites at this point, but we''ll have to see how stable they are in our testing. If anyone knows of any other reliable, java-based chat servers out there please drop me some mail at [email protected].

Thanks,

Zach

A note on the Chat room.

Zach and myself spent an hour playing with the new chat room last night....Its way beyond top shelf..

Also we can have 200 folks in there at a time with ease. The chat room I worked on last year on another site would start booting folks out after 30 or more got in. This will be like having a big seminar every week on MuskieFIRST.

Chats will be held soon on Thursdays at 8pm... I will post the details before the chats come up.[]

OK another update. The network switch should take place here within the next couple of days. With any luck I should be able to initiate the DNS changes tomorrow night.

Also, it looks like we have settled on a chat server "solution". In all of our test installations it has been very stable and is extremely easy to use, which is the most important part in my book.

Scott, you said it not me haha.

Update for anyone interested: I updated the DNS tonight, but the new DNS record will point to the old server until I think most DNS's have picked it up (2 days or so). At that point I will point it to the new server, so most of you won't notice the change. We should be fully live on the new system by wednesday night-right now it's just a waiting game.
