Posts: 1137 Location: Holly, MI | I was curious if anyone ever tried the "Wonder Bar" for removing scent from their hands when fishing. I know guys who have scent free soap in thier boat. There has been plenty of discussion on adding scent to baits over the years but how about accidentally adding negative scent to your tackle? A little grease from the motor or trailer then you tie on a lure and bingo, no fish. Blame it on the jet-skiiers or the moon phase right? Jeepers, think how bad a bug repellant must smell or a cigarette. It might be a small thing but aren't we all looking for those little things that add up and might make a difference? The wonder bar intrigues me, I keep looking at it in catalogs but hav not bit yet?

Posts: 26 Location: St Cloud, MN and Madison, WI | I always thought that. I always seem when I drive the boat (we have a tiller) I dont catch as many fish so I usually have my dad drive or put gas in the boat.

Posts: 32958 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Muskies do not have as keen a sense of smell as many of the freshwater fish. I have always felt it was totally unnecessary to worry about scent much(negative or positive) while fishing muskies.

| I keep a blue gill in me pocket; whenever I change baits, I just stick hand-in-pocket, wiggle me fingers and BINGO, no negative scents from Pay Days, Coke Colas, jerky, Slim Jims, Velveeta, or whatever I got on them at the time. Does it work? Probably not, but having a pan fish in your pocket can make a bad day better, and a good day even gooder... | |||

Posts: 285 | Muskies LIKE the smell of cigarettes. I rub my lures in a cigarette butt can; fresher is better but old ashes will do. I am still crunching the numbers to determine if butts from Camel Wide Lights work better, or a mixture of those and Marlboro Lights. This message has been brought to you by your friends at Phillip Morris/Kraft Food Services and RJ Reynolds/Nabisco. Later, Papa Joe

| Thanks Jo; here in the "sophisticated" east coast region, the above mentioned meat is referred to as "Treet", a delicacy whether slapped between 2 pieces of potato bread, or marinated in Tabasco and fried! Fish or no fish, me hands are gonna waift of some kinda food scent... | |||

Posts: 384 Location: Eagle River, Alaska | Steve is probably correct about the smell range of the musky. I know here in Alaska there are many top guides who cure roe for bait and absolutely insist it never be touched by human hands or it does not work nearly as well. They put on gloves to remove the roe and when the both cure it and bait the hook. I have caught many kings on roe and I manhandled the heck out of the stuff.....you could probably get my fingerprints off the stuff. Recall reading an article from a northeastern university many years ago where they talked about some fish being put off by the scent from oils in human hands (which would mean the Sponger doesn't count). A good percentage of guides up here spray there trolling lures with WD-40 every time they check them.....maybe it just makes them run smoother.... Brian

Posts: 149 | I agree with Steve. I don't think muskies react negatively (or positively) to scent at all. I've never made it any priority to wash my hands before handling lures etc. and I seem to see and catch my fair share of fish regardless of what scent may have rubbed off on my bait(s). Walleyes are another story. I do have no scent soap in the boat and use it regularily when walleye fishing.

Posts: 58 | Not sure about sent good or bad , BUT................. last fall Matt {my son} and I were floating suckers. I smoke, he does not . 1st day he gets three I got none 2nd day he gets 2, I get none . The suckers were no more than 10 feet apart right at the side of the boat while we casted. Next time we use suckers he's putting them on and we will see what happens. RonP Chicago Madd Dogg Lures http://my.core.com/~caveman
