Has anyone ever deepsea fished around the Dominican Republic? Our family is going there tomorrow night for a week of "non-stop stress". (Like what color umbrella would look best in my drink?) I hope to get out at least one day to fish.
Does anyone have a charter that they have used and been satisfied with? The websites that I have found show marlin trips for $1200/day. Somewhere around $400-$500 would be easier to handle with taking the family out.

I didn't think that it would be possible to find a location anywhere that hasn't been fished by anyone on this board.

My buddy just got back from there. He just walked down to the Marina and found a boat willing to take him out for like $200. There were people at his resort that booked the same boat through the resort tour promoter and paid alot more. My wife and found out the same thing in Mexico, where we just checked around till we found a reputable captain that would sign us on the side(not through a charter service). Our bellhop hooked us up with him and it was great. The local charter service had the same boat booked the day after we fished with them for over twice the price. There is a drawback to this type of booking. You have to go by the word of the captain, and take the chance that when you get down there that everything will be booked up. The most expensive half day charter for Sails and Marlin in Mexico where we were, was around $600-700. We paid 300 and had an awesome trip. It took us all week to find him, and we thought at point that we wouldn't find an open boat, as everything was booked up. When we go again, I'll probably try to get in touch with the cappy that took us out, and book in advance.

I know this is late, but, fishing at the Dominican is more of a boat ride than anything. It is not a desired location for fishing. They do catch wahoo sometimes but it is an unreliable location. I would not spend the cash to fish unless you are looking to go on a nice boat ride. If you do, bring a few magnum raps with you.

We didn't get out fishing. Everything else while we were there was awesome.
One guy I had met, went out with four of his buddies. One line broke so the crew put the rod away, they only had one bait per rod!! One of his friends caught one fish and the captain had each guy hold the fish so that he would have more pictures to show! The equipment was marginal at best. Even the tour guide warned me against fishing.

Thanks for the responses Reef Hawg and Great Waters, but we were already at the airport on our way by the time that you had posted.
There were more non-Americans than Americans at the resort which made some of the "views" on the beach quite incredible!

Ah, yes, that look. Your out on the beach, minding your own business and you can just feel that hole being stared right through you. You don't want to look but you know you have to look over at your wife. Your first reaction is to say "what"? but we know what and she won't say. Then your just in a silent uncomfortable waiting mode untill she finally says what the reason is. The conversation usually ends with a few "fines", "whatevers" and "just forget it" and all the time we just can't wait to be back on the beach tomorrow.

I am very blessed being married to the goddess that I am. She is very understanding, which she would have to be being married to me! However, we do have a very un-flexible understanding as well, "I can look, as long as I don't touch!"
There were so many around that most days there were two or three around us, by their choice, within twenty feet!
In a beach situation, sunglasses are very beneficial for protection of your eyes from ultraviolet damage!
Foreign countries can be enjoyable!
