Howdy! Right now I am throwing a 6'6" MH St. Croix Premier and it is my only rod. I'm about to buy a new rod and I'm wondering what the benefits are to the longer rods. I'm thinking about a 7'6" MH thorne brothers diamondback to be the next rod. I'd like this rod also to be pretty versatile. I'm 5'9", does that make a big difference when considering rod length?

Thanks a ton,

What kind of baits will you be throwing with this rod? I'm also 5' 9" and I have a 8'6" and a 9' and I like using boath of them. I seem to get longer casts and if you get a strike on the very end of your cast you will be able to pick up slack line faster and get a better hookset. Hope this helps.

Bo,

The best ALL AROUND rod length would be a 7' 6" you will be able to throw anything in your tackle box with this rod.

Bo,

I started out using lots of different rod lengths but seem to like the 7ft 6 and the 8ft rods the best. I have a 8ft 6 and use that when the conditions call for it.

I am 6ft and fish out of a Ranger 620VS. Thats is a taller than average height in the front of the boat so I like the longer rods. I just like the added power and castability of a longer rod.

Ralph said it well when he said "you can't go wrong with a 7ft 6 rod. I would go to a 8ft because of the distance I am standing off the water.

The boat you fish out of will determine rod length also.

I like to hold the rod/reel in my hand and let the tip of the rod just hit the water. This makes a figure 8 easy with little bending of the legs and back.

When I fish out of a friends boat that is lower to the water I use my smaller rods.

Jerk bait and twitch bait rods tend to be shorter. 6ft -- 6ft 6 -- 7ft

Bucktail, crank bait, top water and trolling rods tend to be longer. 7ft 6 -- 8ft -- 8ft 6-- 9ft.

My advice would be to get a good 7ft or 7ft 6 heavy for Jerk baits and twitchin.

Then pick up a 7ft 6 - 8ft - or 8ft 6 for bucktails, cranks, ect.

Remember your boat height. Standing in the front of your boat working a jerk bait with too long of a rod will drive you nuts. Its nice to work a rod that will stay out of the water while using jerk baits and pull baits.

Better yet, pick up a pile of rods in all lengths and sizes. In a few years you will have a assortment anyway, might as well start out with them all. LOL

Use whateve is comfortable for you. Im 5'10in and a 7'6 is way too long for me. My 7ft 4 is ackward at times. I prefer 6'9 and my little 6'4. I catch just as many fish as anyone else. Its basically preference. Go for it!

I agree with Evar. It is definitely a preference thing. I'm 5'9 and prefer 7'6" and 8' for most stuff. You really do have to try a few and find out what you like.

I agree that a long rod is the way to go. I am a super tall dude at 5'3". My favorite rod is an 8' St. Croix. It is a super versatile rod that can be used in most situations. It gives you the ability to perform deep figure 8s, fish around objects and get better leverage on fish. The major advantage a longer rod has over a short one is that the rod does most of the work and keeps you fresh throughout the day!!!

Go with a 7'6" or longer. You wont be disappointed.

Bunch of great input hear. Thanks. I am looking at getting new rod and have been looking at the bigger rods. Talked to a St Croix rep the other day at our local bait shop and he said the 6ft rods are there slowest sellers now. Really like the feel of the 7'6 and 8' premeir rods.

I have been after Muskie for a long time and I have found that for me the 7 1/2 foot rods work the best except for the big jerk baits. then the 6 1/2 foor models work the best. Most of my rods are MHs. But XH for jerk baits. Bob
