Looking for some advice...My family and another are looking to head to the northwoods this summer for a week. I'm interested in finding a resort type setting on a good fishing/musky lake. Aside from that, to keep the wives and kids happy, I'd like to find something accessible to the usual tourist traps - shopping, parks, zoos, etc. Don't mind staying off the beaten path to avoid the summer traffic onslaught.

Off the bat, I'm thinking Minocqua, Eagle River or Hayward areas. Can I get some suggestions of different spots as well as some recommended cabin or resort type rental properties? Also - we'll probably need another boat, so a place with rentals would be good to.

Thanks in advance for the advice!

If you are looking to stay a bit off the beaten path and still very near the center of all the Northern Wisconsin tourist attractions in Minocqua and Eagle River, I would seriously consider the Rhinelander area. The area is littered with lakes, most with resorts on them. You can have your choice of dozens of smaller 200-500 acre lakes within minutes of your resort, or take on the bigger waters of Pelican lake.

If you want more detailed info feel free to email me.

There are many cottages/retreats that are on lakes which you can find on the internet. I could help direct you more if you want to Email me about the Minocqua area. Or you can hunt around on this link: http://www.minocqua.org/home.asp There are many area lakes where you can rent cabins by day or week. I am not sure when you are coming up but, you may want to look a little further out side of town in any direction because around Minocqua even during the week can be pretty hecktic. If you were thinking about staying "out of town" between Rhinelander, Minocqua, and Eagle River. That would be Lake Tomahawk. Maybe a place to start?

i stayed here last fall. great owners, very family friendly resort. big muskies in the lake (i netted the fish my brother-in-law is holding on the front of their website), although i hear it can be tough for 'skies in the summer due to the gin-clear water; bass fishing is good for the kids. plus...it's only 20 minutes from minocqua so you've got tons of access to other waters and all the touristy stuff that comes with it.

When I was a kid, we used to stay up on Buckatobon just outside Conover. Was a great place to enjoy two weeks. We stayed at a place called Waldron's Silver Bell, on Lower, back then and it was very relaxing and homey. Have no idea what it's like now, I think the original owners grand-daughter now owns it. Anyway, was kinda nice there was several places you coud get to for dinner etc in next to no time. Was off the beaten path so you could ride bikes on the back roads, pick berries etc. Also, stayed at Ken's Hillview, on Upper, once too. That was nice as well. About 17 miles north of Eagle River so I wasn't real far from the tourist stuff either. Kind of in the middle of Sayner, Star Lake area. A short drive to North and South Twin as well.

I have the answer to all your requests and concerns! North Twin Lodge! Our family has been going up to this resort for at least 10 years. It has all the amenities for the wife and kids and non-fishermen, as well as 3800 acres of a great multi species fisheree. There are substantial areas of different types of structures to fish. It has the size and variety that provides more water than you can possibly fish in a week without getting bored. North Twin Lodge has the best three sided slips of anywhere I have ever been. The resort is protected from 99.9% of all storm winds by a major island. There is a great gently sloping clean sand beach, blacktopped basketball court, hiking trails, 12 minutes from Eagle River, clubhouse with cable TV, rental boats, canoes, paddleboats, and a very scenic clear water lake. There is a very consistant topwater bite as well as reasonably cooperative beautifully marked muskies.
The Resort is owned and operated by, two wonderful people, Tom & Kay Hickson. There website is: www.newnorth.net/northtwinlodge
Their e-mail address is: [email protected]
North Twin Lodge is truely a throw back to the old "up north" recreational experiences. It is a fabulous family resort that can provide great muskie fishing opportunities as well. Everyone wins!
Contact them soon because the fill up each year very early!
I hope to see you there!

I would go after the minoqua area... I wouldn't neccasarily fish there but once you are in minocqua you have tons of good lakes around to fish.. Arba vitae lakes, squirel the list goes on... There is a lot of isolated lakes that you will only see a few boats on at a time, unless you hit Tomahawk or Minocqua. I have heard it is hard to produce fish from those lakes, I certainly didn't get anything from Tom. or Mino., but once I started hitting the surrounding lakes the action was pretty good.

I forgot to mention that the third week in June on average over the years has been a good fishing period for muskie activity.

These are places I have stayed and can recommend as good quiet family friendly places.

Kerecman's fishtrap resort in the boulder juntion area.
Deadhorse lodge on the flambeau flowage
Running Bear resort on the manitowish chain
Back o Beyond reosrt on teal lake near hayward
Reeder's Recess resort on the chip(they went condo a couple years back, hopefully they are still renting, worth checking on)

These resorts have ample play areas and decent swimming areas. They won't break your wallet either.
