| Hey, Kinkaidians. Being in high school and all, I didn't get a chance to take out the boat this weekend, seeing as how dad wasn't freed-up, but I ended up taking my prom date down to the spillway to sit by th e falls, and enjoy a little afternoon luncheon...as well as some afternoon Jake crunchin'.  She enjoys hiking and stuff, and our little jaunt up the face of the dam, and up the falls was enjoyable. No fish, but you never know. I made a few half hearted casts off the dam face, but ironically spent most of my time below the spillway. I figured the current would make things better for fishing, if there were any fish actually down there. Saw a couple down below the spillway this time last year; acted sick, hit them on the head with a lure and then the literal rod tip and couldn't provoke a thing from them. Still worth a shot, and frankly I think they still come over the spillway. The one I saw last year was mid-30" or a little over, and at the most it could have been five years old, seeing as how the barrier was installed in '98 I believe, and that would have given it 4 years of growing. Looks a little small for a Kinkaid fish only that old, given that the fish stopped coming over in '98. Curiouser and curiouser...and don't tell me the big fatties int he river don't still find t heir way up there now and then to spawn and such. Frankly, I wish they'd somehow net off the big "pond" below, and keep a pool of muskies, kinda like the situation at Shelbyville, although they have free roam. Ironically their loss of muskies ove rthe spillway seems to have been their gain; fish are alot easier to shoot in a barrel, if you get my drift. Oh by the way, are topwaters effective this time of year? I've heard they're an all-year bait, given their worked at the right speed and depth...since fish can be really shallow, and there's not limit to how shallow a topwater can fish until you hit the bank, they seem perfect for shallow water fishing to me. Today's choice was primarily a Poe's Giant Jackpot, black with orange belly, with a twitched Jake and a 9" Storm Swim Shad thrown in. Big hunk of rubber, but awfully good jigging bait, and good to work real slow, nearly weedless and snagless too, but I opted for topwater, seeing as how there's usually a lot of former "kite-eating trees" that happen to be submerged and thus take on a healthy diet of expensive fishing lures. If the fish will take, they'll come up for it in that clear water. Any success, below nad above the spillway, would be greatly appreciated, as wella s advice on fishing this time of year, which I have little experience with...and guys, what do you do for muskies during "afterglow" [post-spawn]? Well, good luck to you all, those of oyu that made it through this entire post, and don't give up on the spillway. Frankly, I think there's some big old fish that just live down ther ein t hat hole...got everything they need, fresh influx of water, food and all. Must be fat too. What say we bring the title home to Kinkaid, boys.
