My wife and i just returned from our honeymoon in Mexico. We were lucky enough to meet a bellboy who loved to fish right when we arrived. His name was Felipe, and he took us out shore fishing on our second night of the trip. He did not use rods and reels, but hand lines. I was amazed to watch his casting form, and the fact that he could wing a bait out into the surf at least twice as far as I could with conventional surf 9' rods and the same amount of weight. It was even more amazing to watch him fight a fish by hand with his 20 kilo mono. He busted off on a couple big tarpon and a shark to begin with, then caught a 34 lb WOERRAL as he called them. He let me try his hand line method, and I was able to get about an 18lber that took at least 20 minutes to land. What fun!!!

We wanted to try for bill fish, but every charter service was completely booked, so we talked to Felipe, and he hooked us up with a buddy of his. boats were averaging about one sailfish a day, or half a fish per trip. The seas were very rough with 6-9'ers and most boats were bringing sick patrons in early when we arrived at the dock. We were lucky to have a good captain and mate who worked hard for us, and showed us their method, and allowed us to be involved in setting the lines. It was cool to troll 12-18 miles per hour with a dead 13" shad 50' behind the boat skipping on the surface. It was an even bigger rush to watch as the first sailfish chased 3 of our baits around, and bit one in half, before finally grabbing ahold of one for good. We were lucky enough to catch 2 Sailfish, one White Marlin, and a Baracuda during our 5 hour outing, and we'll both never forget it. My wife got the big one of the trip, and one of the bigger ones caught so far during their season at what the mate said was 3 meters. The fight from those salt water fish was extaordinary. We did some more shore fishing after that, where I cast musky lures and soft plastics and got my equipment ripped to shreds by several Baracuda(even the small ones feel like a sports car is pulling on the other end). Next year, I will have tougher hear, as the light musky equipment just did not cut it.

We can't wait to go back!!!!!

No, its my left hand trying to hold on for dear life. The photos don't show it, but the seas were trying to dump us all day.

Congrats Jason, saltwater fish roooooock! Where in mexico did you go? My wife and I travel the pacific side and we catch sails, mahi-mahi, and marlin. The only good reason for winter is saltwater fishing. capt bigfish

Hola-shit! The only thing we saw alive on a 4 hr tour on my honeymoon was some flying fish trying to get away from the boat.
Man-O-day that looks like some fun fishing. I get this stinkin' Saltwater mag each month and it only teases me more and more.

Capt. We were on the Gulf side on the Tulum Corridor(Riviera Maya according to the travel agencies). It is about an hour or so south of Cancun. I picked the resort because it was so close to the Marina there(walking distance) and was able to talk to the fishermen everyday.

Nice work Jason!! Looks like you 2 had a great time. We are going to Missouri for our honey moon??!!!?? How that came about I'll never know. Hopefully we can tangle with some beasts out that way, but nothing like what you guys experienced. Way to go!
