Posts: 7077 Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | I forgot to put stabilizer in the Merc (50hp 2 stroker) at the end of the year...cant tell how much gas is in the tank, probably close to full. Really want to get out next weekend, but really DONT want to smoke the motor by running varnish through it! What the hell do I do?

Posts: 373 Location: Huber Heights, Ohio | I have put it in my truck before, about 4 or 5 gal at a time mixed with the fresh gas already in the tank. Truck never knew the difference.

Posts: 1023 Location: Lafayette, IN | I can't imagine gas is going to varnish up very much in only 3 months time, Slamr. You were still running in November weren't you? If it was 6 or 8 months that would be a little different. High octane gas from the station will remain stable for a couple of months easy. I'd crank it up and see before I started sucking on a gas line. (unless you just like the aftertaste...)

Posts: 32923 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Your gas will be fine. If you can, just add some premium to the tank and run the motor. You're only talking a couple months, and the unleaded is not as prone to going bad as gas used to be.

Posts: 184 Location: Rockford Il 61108 | I have an old 83, 115 Johnson in which ive never winterized it. I use the gas every spring and never added anything to it. I dont believe in all the hype about winterization. You dont need it. Now i dont know much about Mercs or the new four strokes, but this old Johnson runs like a champ.

Posts: 670 Location: Minnetonka , MN. | I like the syphon it out idea . then store it in an open container . It won't take long and it will be gone. That's what a real moron would do. Edited by TECK 3/8/2004 12:33 PM

Posts: 150 | More than 6 months not being moved in the tank, (CHANGE). 4 months or less run it!! If its a 4 stroke you can go about a year with a good quality, 89 oct or higher fuel. I had my 25 mariner for over 10 years and never winterized the fuel. But I made sure that I ran it out of the carbs before I stored it. It never failed to start in the Spring. If you dont want to run it as is, get a 6 gal tank and remix with a new batch 50/50. Shouldnt take long to burn it up. But I dont think you will have problems if it set less than 5 months. I have had engine generators set for 2 years with fuel in the tank and they never failed to start.

Posts: 96 Location: Eden Prairie, Mn. | SIPHON, add some isopropyl alcohol 3-5 oz. to absorb moisture and some fuel system cleaner - 2-stroke compatible !! Loss of octane(old gas) dirty carb(s) and water = pinging/pre-detonation and engine damage. Cheap, quick and gives you a clear conscience to fish and not worry about equipment. Mother
