Look's like the Tranx 500 now has another serious competitor, the Fathom 500. Being a tackle company more directed at the saltwater anglers, I always thought it would make sense for Penn to design the big low pro.Intro priced at $499.95, with two gear ratios available, will see if it catches on with guys who throw the extra large baits. only time will tell if a Penn should be put in the same sentence as a tranx 500...I have two that are now 12+ years old both with over 100 muskies and they are still going strong - remember thinking these tranx 500's better last 5 seasons for this kind of money...ive probably owned 20 reels since 2000..many don't make it 1 season - like some of the "highly promoted new cheap musky reels" - JUNK!

Agree. The Tranx 500 earned it's reputation to be at the top. But, to be fair, and the point I'm trying to make, the reel had nothing else to be compared to. Comparing the Tranx 500 to other manufactuers 400 reels for the last decade or so did not make sense. I have no idea if the Fathom will be able to hold a candle to the Tranx, But competition is good. And as u said, only time will tell. Kdawg

I have 4 od the newer 400 size Penns. 2 squalls and 2 fathom. All have been amazing reels with no hiccups. I'll definitely be grabbing a 500
