I've been hearing my local lake is good for open water trolling because large muskie feed on the schools of shad which are often found in 6-12 ft of water in open water. I was wondering how to troll in open water. I was going to throw out a liplock, mattlock and maybe a swimming dawg or poseidon. Do I just drive around in open water? Do I go up and down like I'm mowing the lawn? Do I drive in a big circle? How do I drive the boat?

A large "S" pattern moving deep & shallow until you contact fish. When you get the hit take notice of any structure in the area. That hit will also occur on a inside or outside turn which tells you what speed interests them. Keep narrowing down your target area until you hone in on the location. Thats what I do, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't but 100% of the time I'm happy being on the water.

Have fun.

This is pretty much what I do as well. Also look for bait balls and try and bring your lure near the bait balls. Sometimes musky are hanging nearby.

If you have any structure trolling the outside contours and working your way in could be something to try. This may apply to basin fishing as well, but most of my own ‘open water’ trolling is on Canadian Shield stuff.

You have the right idea with the big crank baits. Get the baits down 10' or so and just drive.
