Posts: 491 | More of a general fishing question than musky specific, but what are you folks using to tie braid to a fluorocarbon leader (8 point braid to 20 pound fluorocarbon) ? I'm currently using a double Uni knot, but was wondering if there's a better alternative that doesn't require a tool. Thanks in advance for your advice.

Posts: 2017 | Alberto is what I'd tie for what you are describing to 20lb leader, for heavier leaders, say 80lb +... one of the strongest braid to heavy mono/flouro knots you can tie, learn a FG ... I still use a uni to uni a ton on say 3/8 fire line to 8lb leader walleye fishing uni/uni is strong enough and super easy as you know. Edited by IAJustin 4/30/2024 4:45 PM

Location: SE/WI | Barrel swivel on every setup I use for multi species. I like keeping leverage on my side. I exclusively use 30lb braid to a barrel swivel and a 2-3' 20lb fluorocarbon leader for all multi species. Walleye, Bass, Steelhead, Lake Trout, King/Coho Salmon, Sturgeon ect. pannies I will go down to 8lb fluorocarbon as well as ice fishing. For reel backing I use 12lb Mono Uni to uni for 30 & 80lb braid. Edited by Musky-Slayer 4/30/2024 7:10 PM

Posts: 72 | The FG knot is the strongest and thinnest knot. There are many incorrect tutorials, but Seth Feider's is good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6YfoW9zD-A. It's usually windy where I fish, so I seldom bother to burn the braid at the end.

Posts: 458 | I have found the FG not difficult to tie on a floro leader of 6 to 8 pounds. That knot seems to like larger lbs. leader test in my observations. I've used it but keep coming back to the Alberto as it has yet to fail me, takes way less time, and works great for smaller leader material.

Posts: 1249 Location: Walker, MN | I use back to-back-Uni, FG and Alberto depending on leader size. Back-to-back Uni works well for me with 6#-10# for walleyes, crappies, smallmouth etc. (drag backed off a bit). Alberto for 10#-20# leaders, and FG for any longer leader over ~25#

Posts: 1726 Location: Mt. Zion, IL | FG or uni to uni here. FG wins strength and smooth contest but takes 2 to 3 minutes to tie. I have never had a uni break unless I was trying to straighten hooks when snagged or the line was shot. I tie FG in the garage and uni on the water.

Posts: 562 Location: deephaven mn | a newer knot was revealed in target walleye called the Dodd knot. I like it as it is smaller in the front so it pases through guides easier if you have a longer leader. 2 or 3 feet
