Subject: cheap split rings on lures=good idea?

I recently was trying to get a bucktail out of a tree by casting a believer and I finally did get it stuck really bad, I pulled and pulled and nothing. I finally put the trolling motor in its highest speed and sped away. After the lure fell I reeled it in and was glad that the whiplash was so strong. But I noticed the split ring had broken and the lure came off the hook. Think about it, they're worth split rings, strong enough to hold a muskie, but not strong enough in a snag situation. I may have to replace all my split rings with cheap ones. Also, they were size 6 since i forgot to say that.

LOL…Let me get this strait. You got a bucktail stuck in a tree. Your next move was to put that rod down, grab another rigged with a believer and cast it into the tree. After both were stuck you put the electric on full and motored away as fast as you could. The believer then broke at the split ring. Now, your concern is that the Worth split rings were too strong and you’re wondering if a less quality split ring is going to solve you problems? Hmmm…
Did you get your bucktail back?

Dude!!! I hung a bucktail in a bush 1 time bank fishing...I started walking up the bank in an attempt to free the bait.....it zipped at the speed of light back at me + sunk 2 trebles in the back of my calf + put me face down in the dirt!!! I had no choice but to jerk the hooks out w/ a pair of pliars + it daggone near made me puke from the tugging + tearing...had to get a tetanus shot 2 days later so BE CAREFUL!!![:0] [:sun:]

Either sell the 120lb thrust trolling motor and scale back to say - maybe an 85lber, start to carry a chain-saw, or just start filing your split rings halfway thru...

Please tell me where you fish, so I can stay away.

Nah, I got the bucktail stuck in the tree earlier this year, before the boat and when I had 10 lb test on. The worth split ring is the one that broke, which helped me not lose a lure, and the trolling motor is only a 30 lbs thurst. But i want to start using the cheap worth split rings for trolling, if i snag something I'll just lose the hooks

NOPE! not a good idea. I will just tell you about the time this year when A large musky pulled the split ring and hook right off my spinnerbait....I would rather loose a few lures then loose a big fish.
What are you doing casting in a tree to begin with!! :)

SHULSTER,
I am thinking that all you need to do is adjust your reel drag correctly to save split rings, lures and a big muskie... I'm with MUSKYJ on that one. I have have hit more than one major snag this year trolling (quite fast I might add), and was able to keep my equipment intact, and save the lure.

That should work for you right? If not - why?

Randy, When I snag a tree, all I can do is cut the line. I've got 2 dephraiders and one deep invader on this one tree, stupid lures dive deep like they're sopposed to.

Zach, you need to get a lure retriever. Get the one with a pole and you should be able to knock them loose. It beats carrying around scuba gear in the boat![:0]

Speaking of scuba gear, I know someone that was fishing off the bank and got a $1 spinnerbait on a lilly pad. He walked into the 50 degree water just to get the spinnerbait. I wonder what he'd do for $20 muskie lures?

purposefully putting weak split rings on large lures would probably result in saving lots of lures, but would also result in lots of your muskie hookups getting away, and with the hook buried in its mouth...not a good idea.

I know that some people think those hooks will eventually fall out, or rust away, or otherwise dissappear, but in the meantime the fish is severely hindered and put at a big disadvantage in surviving.

not my idea of catch and release

I have Cabellas 17 foot aluminum extension retriever, and it has retrieved all lures i have hung up in 15 feet of water or less except for one type....large rubber worms...they don't seem to get hooked by the hoop.

it has paid for itself many times over, and also will work in trees if you're snagged at 17 ft or less.

good fishing...jwl
