I have a Crestliner 1750 fish hawk, and I'm putting a 9.9 kicker on it. Do I need a short shaft or long? The main motor is a 90 Honda. I've seen kickers mounted on the transom and on transom mounts. What's better? I have a shot at a 9.9 short shaft and want to make sure it'll work.

Thank you in advance. musky39

Go with a long shaft. Short shaft will work, but you'll not have as much power, and won't be able to reverse at all. You need to get the prop down into the water under the transom.

were are you going to be using it? I have a short shaft and it works well in the fall on LOTW running 3-4 mph. Dose not run well wide open but I don't have it for that. If you want to get in close the shorter the better.

I also have that same hull...get the long shaft (or buy the components to make it a long shaft), you won't be sorry.

If you get the short shaft the prop will be partially obscurred by the transom which will cause you to lose power initially because of lack of water flow which may also cause the motor to overheat due to lack of water being picked up . Also if you try to operate at higher RPM's the prop will cavitate (blow out completely).

If the motor you are looking at is a good price it won't cost that much more to turn it into a long shaft motor. All that's normally required is a longer drive shaft, longer pickup tube (for cooling), and the spacer on the lower unit housing. You can usually find these parts used to make it even more affordable!

I have a 2001 1750 fish hawk and I have a 2000 evinrude 9.9 four stroke long shaft on it and it works great, Pushes the boat with two guys and all the gear at 6.5 mph on a gps.
Your not going to set any records with it but it's great for trolling all the way down to .5 mph.
Good hunting,Jeff <*)))))><
