I have been mulling around the idea of doing some fly casting for musky as I fish a couple spots were it might been effective. I wanted some help setting up the outfit so i decided to make the 3 hour drive to Musky Fool in Wanakee WI. Glad I did, these guys really knew their stuff and the staff took the time to walk me through the different rod weights and line options etc.

With limited fly fishing experience I wanted some guidance so, after some discussion I ended up getting a two handed Chippewa River 9' - 10 weight rod. This was matched to 400 grain intermediate line with a shooting head. Leader will be 3' for 40 lb to a ten inch wire leader. Leader will be joined to fly line and snap with a perfection loop while wire is joined to leader with an alberto knot. I also got an extra reel loaded with Sonar sinking line. Very simple set up

Saw an episode of Keyes Outdoors where one of his guests was fly fishing for musky, on a river I think. Caught at least one and moved others. The big streamer type fly looked great in the water, seemed to pulsate. Wish I could remember the guy's name, think he may be a guide. Good luck in your new venture!

I made my own fly rod 9ft 10wt with a redington behemoth reel. Both are great match for Muskie I think you’ll like your setup.

So what flies will you be using for them meat eaters. As I make my own and had luck on one pattern so far.

Nice. I haven’t gotten anything off those styles yet. Been doing great with articulated flies.

A local guy here in Colorado (Barry Reynolds) is a famous Fly Fishermen and has wrote many of Fly Fishing books on fishing for Pike with a Fly Rod. And another good book "Muskie On The Fly" by Robert Tomes. Barry used to kick our butts in the Muskies INC fishing contest every year.
I have a 9 Weight I've had for years but never taken the time to learn how to use it. I think I'm going to try to catch some Carp this year.

A word of caution...stay away from "hardware" at any cost, it'll fail you at some point, guaranteed! Those snaps...dont! Use a simple "jig loop" knot that many saltwater folks use. Easy to tie..EASY and darned near fail-safe!

If you wish to go that route I'll look it up on my 'puter some[lace and post it. It's very - VERY - simple and as good as any I've found to be 101% reliable...
