Got a 12" Mattlock in the Muskie Mission Complete auction. I live on a shallow chain and would like to try trolling it in open water. To keep it shallow was thinking of putting behind a planer board, with roughly six feet of line out and pin in front hole. From what I have read, they "wander" at relatively slow speeds. Is 6 ft of line enough for it to do its thing?

Yes, it'll wander with 6' out. For reference, the boatside videos on youtube have around that much line out. It wouldn't hurt to try 10-20' of line out too, to get a hair more depth and give it a slightly longer leash.

Front pin, behind a board works. On the 12" ML I use front pin all season.

In my experience they start swimming at or just below 2.5 mph, and the wander kicks in around 3 mph, maybe slightly under. I've caught fish going 2.8 mph up to just over 4 mph.

Thanks, that is helpful. Have done some trolling but not with anything that big. Bought boards and tried them out but really have not used them.

In your experiences, have you seen a planer board minimize wander, thusly, becoming a strike detractor with these types of lures?

Reef Hawg: On the contrary- from what I've seen, the shorter amount of line, the more wander. Not the other way around. For quite some time, many folks' favorite way to fish mattlocks was 4ft to 15ft behind a planer board- did awesome in open water.

We've caught plenty with just a 5' leader out behind an in-line planer board. They make hard cuts and rolls with a short amount of line. On a mast line, the sliding release will often walk up and down the line a bit. In my experience, a 10" will walk a little more....8Fives too.

No, not in my experience. I've boated about 15 total on supernaturals, with 6 in the 49.5-52 range. A little over half of the total and 4 of the 6 big ones were behind boards.
