2001 is now over, and all we can do is ice fish, drink beer, and wait till next year(unless you'd like to come out and watch me bounce my new SuperTopraider off the ice on lake Petenwell).

How was everyones year, did you catch the fish of your dreams, did you learn something new???
Lets hear about it!!!

I had by far my best year ever for musky fishing as a whole, though I didn't personally catch a really big fish(45.5" was my tops this year), thoiugh I had the opportunity to net a 49.5"er for my dad, and 7 others that topped 45", including a horse of a fish that Handayman caught out of my boat in june(girth was a mazing).

I had 96 muskies grace my boat this year(tried to the last day to break 100), with 57 of them being mine. Best day was an 8 legal night on the river, with 5 over 40", all on a black Topraider. Worst week, was the 2nd one in Aug. when I caught zippo in Canada!!!

Lets hear some 2001 stories, and Handyman, no need to talk about any net overboard stories!!!

I had a VERY strange year, losing the biggest fish I have ever had hooked, TWICE, and seeing more pigs than normal, but no 50" plus stayed stuck...had good numbers for the limited time on the water, and learned to work a glide bait like Beav, a Slammer twitch bait like Jason Smith, and that Salmon from the big pond tastes really good....

Next season I will be on the water in Northern Wisconsin much more, and I am looking forward to it already!![8)]

Jason, my post on MH was right. You are not done throwing your topraider by a long shot. Do you vertical jig in under the ice?[;)] Congrats on the year.

My year is still going untill the ice tell me to quite. I will be out this weekend.[]

I had a great year even if I didn't boat alot or any real large fish. I started off losing a 4 footer on my first trip, in fact the first fish of the year, but I spent more time on the water and less time in a tree this fall.
Best part of the year was rekindling a friendship with Sworrall. We spent a couple of great days on the water and got to know each other better than before. I guess it's 'cause we're all growed up now. I'm already looking forward to spending more time with him next year and actually sticking a couple of pigs on plastics.
Another great part of the year was getting to spend time getting to know some of the guys from this board. There's a lot of good fishermen and good people visiting this site. It's almost like group therapy. Basicly we're all a little crazy to begin with, this is like voluntary incarceration. It's that birds of a feather thing....and this is our roost. []

a few things I won't hold out on you guys. Firstly that waters with heavy fishing pressure can produce good-sized fish more often than you think if you are persistent in your efforts. Also talking to (way too drunk) local fishermen, gives you just that edge. Especially if they are drunk!

no fish on rattling lures this year (probably Jlong's fault!![] [;)] [:praise:] ) but all on strong wobbling ones and homemade jerkbaits with very irregular action.

trolling at 5m behind the boat prooved better than the 'normal' distance of 10-20m. Also, even in cold weather, we trolled faster than usual. It produced more strikes.

If you locate several fish in one area and boat a fish on one lure, don't throw that one back. Get another one. The idea is this: probably all fish saw that first lure and only one wanted it. The other are there but they may want some other lure-action to get them to strike. A friend had this happen to him. He found a deep drain of 6m deep in a shallow plate of 1.5m deep. He ankered next to the underwater drain and proceded to cast into the drain. After landing a pike, he quickly changed lures and continued to cast. he took about 7 or 8 pike that day, none was smaller than 97cm!! The biggest one being 127cm. How about that?

Todd, do you know of a good weighting system for the Topraider for vertical jigging?

Handyman, you gotta put me on those eyes' dude!!! Early ice could be fantastic(if we ever get it).

I had my greatest, and first year ever. I so far have caught 4 muskies (may or may not be done for the year) My largest being a fat 44"er. I also snagged a 3 inch muskie fry with a walleye jig and caught an 18" bass while muskie fishing. Everything was cpr'ed (w/ the exeption of the bass and muskie fry, they were caught and released w/o the photo, no camera:( )

Jason,
Fortunately I live in Illinios and our season is not over. Went out yesterday (Tuesday) and got two small ones ( 30"- 33"). So far having a good year, plenty of fish in the boat for me and my clients. []

This past year was my best ever for numbers. Clients and I put 144 muskies in the boat. However, we did get stuck for size. The majority of them were between 34 and 40 inches. The largest fish that was boated was just under 45 inches.

For a while, we were stuck at 42 inches, but the fish were nice, 18, 19 and 22 pounds. Then, in October, the bigger fish started showing up and November was even better. While we still didn't land any of those big girls, it was good to have them on. In one day, we lost 3 fish that were in the upper 40" class.

The best period for total numbers was June, when 31 muskies were boated in 3 days.

So, all in all, not a bad year, over 18 new muskie hunters caught their first legal fish. The really cool thing was that 3 of the "clients" were 11, 9 and 5 years old! It was really a fun year.

Steve@GS, I was in florida during that hot june bite. Left in cold weather, came back to 90+ degree weather and totally missed it. I knew it would come too and was banging my head against the wall.

Jason, I would try that new drop shot method the bass fishers are using. Another would be a three way rig with a float in front of the top raider. You could also try a bell sinker atatched to the rear split ring. Hey when there's a will there's a way!

Hi all,

Well, I would have to say that I had a great year. My numbers were down from last year, and I didn''t surpass my personal best. So why was it a great year?

1.) I saw my 10 yr old Eric catch his first legal on Pewaukee the day after his birthday.
2.) Nearly the whole months of June and July I was "distracted" by the phenomenal walleye bite on Lake Winnebago.
3.) I fished with many new people, with 3 outings that were arranged right here on MuskieFirst! All three were great guys to fish with.
4.) Finally did a houseboat trip on LOTW
5.) I had my chances for two very nice fish. Next time I''ll cross their eyes!!
6.) Got to fish Lake X with the master, Dave Dorazio.
7.) Spent an afternoon with Jason Smith at the PMTT on Pewaukee.
8.) Fished several new(for me) lakes.
9.) 3 fish in the boat on my final day on the water.
10.) This is the last year for my current boat. I''m really going to miss it. Well, I guess until I get the new one, hehehe.

Tight Lines all, and Happy Holidays.

So far it has been a pretty good year and I am not ready to give up with the recent mild tempitures. I have got about 20 or 21 fish in the boat myself with 48 inches the biggest. Lost the biggest fish I ever had on in 27 years of this disease. I netted my partners biggest (longest) release which went 51 inches. I am going to try to get at least two more fish so I will break my personal best of 21. Lookout Kinkaid and Webster. Musky Alan[]

I've had 2 terrible years in a row now .Went to Canada the first week of August and the fishing was very slow.No muskies in the boat but some nice northerns up to 40in.The weather was in the 90's with no wind all week.It was my 11yo daughter's first trip to Canada and my fist trip without the guys.I was unsure how'd she handle it.It turned out to be my best vacation ever. She had a great time and didn't want to leave at the end of the week.It couln't have been more fun for both of us.Had 2 trips no Vilas co. in June and only could manage 1 fish.Didn't fish after Canada until the end of October.Fall was slow but did manage 5 fish from 37 to 47 inches.I sure could have used more vacation considering how warm the weather stayed. Could have fished all the way to the end of the season.Last year I went up for one more shot the weekend before Thankgiving and there was a snowstorm and the landings were froze . You never know from year to year.Well,on to the shows to spend alot of money.

The year was a little strange for me. Have never broke 60 for numbers and came up with 57 for the year. Had 18 fish over 20#s and 9 of those were over 25#s with one of those over 30#s, so overall size was good. All of that came even though I had the worst November ever, only 4 fish the whole month! Best day was 8 in one day with three of those being over 20#s - made for one happy client [] . This was the BEST big walleye year I have ever had with 27 fish over 4#s being boated.

As I do every year, I will be posting my end-of-year report on my web site if anyone is interested. It details my season and what went on around the Hayward area, lots of pictures and stories (true ones!). Drop in if your'e intesested, should be updated in the next week.
