Decided to try a different time to hit LOTW this year. We set a date for June 26-July 3. I'm a little skeptical only because I've heard the fishing really heats up the second and third weeks of July. Typically we have gone the third week or last week of July through early August.

However, our efforts have only reaped minimal rewards. We would have an idea as to where to look, IF we were going the week we typically go. Our dilemma is where might we find these early season fish? Are they still going to be in the backs of bays and/or roaming weedbeds? Should we look to the rocks? At this time period, have the fish begun to venture out towards the mouths of the spawning bays? To burn, or not to burn? What baits where? Any info at all would be GREATLY appreciated. I'm a little anxious about this year's trip.

Also, do these fish seem to carry a little more weight since (theoretically) the spawning period has just ended? Or have they shed most of their weight at this point? Thanks in advance!

I think it will really depend what type weather we have in April and may that will determine what the fish will be doing.Only Mother Nature knows for sure, but typically I like the opening weeks and there still can be some very large fish available. We tend to use the run more gun alittle more style hitting alot of bays, mouths and wood. Can be a great time, first baits and all!

That week is usually a pretty good time to try. I like weeds and bucktails first, but have caught fish on every type structure and lure type made at that time! If water temps are above 60 degrees don't be afraid to look at mid water structure (rocks).

Usually fish at this time of year are about the lightest they are all year. There are exceptions, but most fish (both males and females) are pretty skinny. Wish I was, maybe I should spawn more!.

I have been to Sioux Narrows and Dog Paw a few times that time of the year, and what Doug and handyman describe is right on. I also have been to the Goon that early, and have done very well, and very poor, depending on water levels and weed growth.

Doug,
Good one!
