Subject: mono on a baitcaster

Anybody have good results with mono on a baitcaster? I recently purchased a "low profile reel" & want to put monofilament on it (less visible flourocarbon line) to throw small plastics. However, it seems that everytime that I put mono on a reel, it immediately "birds nests" and is a nightmare to use. I run the line thru a phonebook and keep good tension on it when I wind it on. Any secret to putting mono on a reel and avoiding this problem? (yes, I do use braids. However, for this application I want to use the line I mentioned). Thanks

I spool one of my reels with 40# Fluorocarbon leader material. I've been using it the past 4 seasons and love it! It does have alot of memory and I've learned to deal with it. Blakemore's Reel Magic does a great job of relaxing the memory. Team Fish is the best I've used thus far and it's also the cheapest. It's probably made by one of the more popular manufacturers anyhow, I doubt there's that many..........RaZe

Stren magnathin and excalibur silver thread are good choices too.

I use mono on my baitcasters alot for creatures, and find good old 14# or 17# Sigma (USA) line from Wally World to do a great job. Uncontrollable backlashes are a result of either poorly balanced equipment or too light a lure for the line. The other possibility is that you are spooling flourocarbon line, which will misbehave on a small spool like that near every time. Go to Berkely Big Game if you want super abrasion resistance, which again is probably not necessary.

I use monofilament on my smaller reels for jigs, too. Use a 14 to 17 pound test lke sworrall mentions. That's plenty. Stay away from the copolymers and fluorcarbons on small spools, they will not spool well especially in the cold.

I have real good luck with Silver Thread and Maxima. I use both on Curado's, usually 12-15lbs test. I always put on a crank after spooling a reel with new line, let it all out and reel it in with a lot of tension that way. Also, when putting line on the reel I put the line in water and use a wet rag to hold the line tight. For baitcasters I put a pencil or screwdriver through the spool so the spool can turn freely but still be in contact with the water..
