Location: Lafayette, IN | I've talked to a couple of Shimano techs in the last year and they all say don't lube the anti-reverse roller bearings on any of your reels. As I look at the design of all my AR roller bearings (regardless of make) I can see why grease would especially be harmful. It would inhibit the rollers from returning to their "anti-reverse" position as grease was displaced behind them on the retrieve. But what about using fine grade oils like Hotsauce on them? Or what about the implications of no lube at all? I suspect that there will always be some incidental lubrication finding it's way to the AR bearings. I cleaned them all per Shimano's instruction (rubbing alcohol and a Q-tips) and expect things will work better. One of my reels was experincing AR failure and I'd greased it at the beginning of the season before finding out what Shimano's recomendations were. what have you experienced or heard?..... |

The problem of the anti reverse slipping because of it being contaminated with oil or grease will be far more noticable in colder weather as the oil's viscosity increases at lower temperatures. |

Location: NeverNever Lake | The ARB works via metal to metal contact to stop counter rotation. Filming(lube) reduces the efficiency to the point of failure. The problems I have encountered with Shimanos has been rust. They seem to have remedied this with this yrs introduction of the A-RB (anti-rust bearings). A couple of things I have done are: don't put covers on the reels and toss em in the rod locker. Keep the reels off of their sides and level on the deck, for the ride home. Grease the spring washers and the drag washers to prevent water from getting to the ARB.
BTW, the TE's ARB is smaller than the standard Calcuttas. But it does have a pawl for back-up when(not if) the bearing fails. |

Location: Lafayette, IN | The AR pawl was what kept my Catala from freewheeling. I think it's a good safeguard on most big game reels. Thanks for the info. Keep it coming. |
