Does the open water bite on Big V persist throughout the year? I am sure there are fish to be caught out there but when temps get to the mid-70s do the fish head back shallower in large part? Anything change about the open water bite as the year moves along if they are still out there? Thanks

Yes it changes with water temp, there will always be some muskies relating to open water as they do in most lakes. Lakes with bug hatches mayfly, lake fly attract more open water fish during hatchs, bait fish (Shad, Cisco) eat the larvea as they come from soft bottoms.. But the higher concentration of open water fish start to relate to structure i.e Rocks/ Weeds/ Breaklines once the water temps rise into the 70's.

in general Cisco's don't spend much time high in the water column July, August and September, like they do June (and later in fall) ... basin roamers are tougher to target in the warm months.. on some Canadien shield lakes "humps" that top out in 15-30' surrounded by much deeper water have been productive for me as the roamers tend to hang out in those areas...you might be a football field away from the "top" but the area is more productive than just randomly casting the abyss in my experience.

The open water bite is largely done by July 4th.
