I've been scouting some smaller waters recently and came across the Apple River Flowage. Just wondering if anyone has ever been on this body of water, and if it would be worth while? I have a boat that can get in skinny water, so just curious if anyone has been out there.

Thanks!

I haven't fished it but when I someone mentions a body of water I will often look up the details. I suspect you have seen the available statistics - if not here is what I found.
640 acres with 24% of the basin under 3 feet in depth. IMO the lake will fish very small as most of the fish should be set up along the channel. Lake has a reputation for overabundant panfish. Most fisherman report having to sort to keep decent sized panfish. Lake historically had very few muskies. However between 2006 and 2011 the DNR stocked 1389 muskies. (panfish control?) State rates the water as B - 3. The above suggests a fishable population of mid 30" fish with the occasional larger specimen. I would not consider it a destination water but if I had a place close by or was a Yak fisherman I would check it out. Might not be a bad bite if you hit it at the right time. Good Luck

pstrombe, you should have stopped after "I haven't fished it". I lived on the lake back when I was in high school and a couple college summers.

If you want to get away from the crowds on Deer/Bone, the Apple is a great place. Musky population is good, probably better than most Vilas/Oneida lakes. Big boat or small, this lake isn't for "yaks". It actually fishes much bigger because of shoreline length. Concentrate on the channel, fish early or late in the year... can get weedchoked in the dog days of summer. From what the guys at llungen told me at the time, the first 50" ever caught on a squirko came from the Apple River Flowage by my dad.

While I am not familiar with the flowage there are many flowages on that river until it dumps into the St Croix

The Apple may not seem like much with its duckweed covered weed matted water but it holds some good ones. Trolling the main channel from islands to the bridge is effective but have to keep constant watch for fouled up baits. I don’t think there’s a bad spot to cast with lay downs and sicken timber throughout. I befriended a guy that lived on the river and guided this was probably 20 years ago no fancy boat or electronics just an old ski boat with basic trolling motor and graph. He had walls filled with polaroid pics of fish he or clients caught. I’ve heard of several 50s throughout the years. My best colors are bright green, pink and orange water tends to have a rust tint to it. Another option is black Brooke Flowage on the other side of amery even smaller water but there in there my biggest from there is a 45in tiger and sure I’ve lost bigger ones. Feel free to hit me up if you want more information.

Thank you guys for all your information! I only live about 40 minutes from there so it is a very manageable day trip or camping trip. I will definitely be taking a cruise over there in the next month or so. Hopefully I'll have some pictures to show!

Also if you want to use a kayak or canoe float the river from Amery to Somerset. You will most likely be all alone and the fishing can be great. It's an easy drift and there are many places to get off the water in between if you don't want to float the entire distance. We have done very well floating this over the years
