We've all seen it right, the post looking for where should I fish or what should I use, stay, ect. Free information. That's fine I guess but doing your own research will make you a better fisherman. Not only are you researching but you learn how as you go. I have people text me all the time for information that would take them a minute to do on their own and I end up doing it. My former job we were tested yearly on this very thing, it wasn't so much the content of the question as it was the ability to find the answers. I find the ability to research and find information a key tool. You may often be the only one looking into it and have it all to yourself. I can remember one lake my dad and I averaged 4 fish per trip for our first 20 trips and we never seen another musky boat during that time. I've had other successes in other places as well. Not only using standard recourses but seeking new ones as well. I have an incredible lake library I have amassed over the years. The chances of me not knowing of a lake X is pretty slim other than I may not have fished it. My options of finding great water to fish on my own very good.

I understand your point. But what would be the purpose of coming to a fishing site? Other than the comedic content?

Can you tell me where to catch walleye on Moses Lake. After 5 trips out I have one carp and one bullhead. Your library probably has some secret cove that I haven't explored after fishing this lake for 22 years.

"Where to stay?" I'd certainly seek advice on that question..

As to "Where to fish/ Where'd you catch 'em"? This guy has the answer, and a sense of humor..

I think there is plenty to learn from websites like this besides what I have mentioned and some great discussion. This site is what WE make of it. The point of my post wasn't a complaint so much as a discussion about the difference in being able to find good information and how it can make you a better angler because of that ability.

What's interesting is we could have a great discussion about fishing from that spot in the boat and it's advantages. I was guiding a youth outing last Saturday and explaining the advantages the back of the boat and when to look for them.

same as when someone posts about whats the best fishing rod, or best whatever... they get as many different recommendations as responses and end up no further ahead

I have found this forum valuable as a form of research. It is a network of information and an excellent platform for sharing just that. I have exchanged many IM's with members outside of thread discussions. I think the "research" I've conducted here on the site has improved my ability to locate/find/catch fish; use/purchase the best gear; and enjoy the sport that much more.

Isn't that the point?

This wasn't meant to be a knock on the message board at all. I have certainly benefitted from it. Most everyone I fish with the M.I. club I belong to and some of the waters I fish have come from or indirectly from here. The thread is more about the ability to find information on your own to become a better angler. Certainly some of that can be done here.

It used to be ok to ask for info when there weren't 10 million people muskie fishing. And looking stuff up wasn't easy back then either. These days you really do need to keep your mouth shut or your spot or technique will be exploited and it will no longer be yours.

If more than two people know about "lake x", it's not lake x anymore. Kdawg

One thing to consider when looking at information from the DNR for example is when the data was collected. An example would be the chain I live on. There was a very thorough study done, starting with fyke nets right after ice out, to shocking survey a few weeks later that looked at the number of fin clipped fish from the nets to the non-clipped to a creel survey done by an on the lakes tech from the start of the season to ice. I first spoke to him in early May and the last time was early November. Good data, but that was 15 years ago and nothing much since then. A lot can change in 15 years. For instance, the chain has benefitted from extended growth walleye fingerling stocking, size limit changes for walleye, and should see some benefit from the recent reduction in bag limits on panfish.
On the other hand, a veteran guide told me that he is seeing fewer musky than he did 15 years ago, and I have also seen fewer musky.
Things change but the DNR doesn't have the resources to continually update data.

Thanks ToddM, I fished that spot you recommended yesterday evening and caught my first walleye of the season. Little guy so I released it, figured you and your dad had probably wiped out all the big fish.

One thing that influenced me as a teenager was a letter I got in the mail from fishing hot spots. Back then it was a club. You got a lake map of the month and plenty of area lake books and individual maps. I bought everything they had. It taught me the value of research. I still have all of it and much much more.

There is 20x information available today than 2 yrs ago, within 5 clicks if you have the desire to seek it out. But then you have to read it or watch it or listen to it and then engrain it into your brain with experience. I feel like such a schmuck when someone actually tells me where to go fish at a certain time of year and I do that and catch fish. I mean - it's like duh ... thanks - I did catch fish but I feel so ... empty. I'm going to join the club called "These Marks" where people just tell me what to do and I buy stuff from them. (That's a joke).
Seriously, the fishing challenge, no matter the species, is learning the nature, the season, the target, the bait ... and then trying to get 'em.
To answer the original query - I just say, "they're usually under the surface," when people ask me where or how unless they are interested in understanding how to do more. My very next response is - hire a guide - they deserve some, "These Hoes" hats and licenses.

I agree with ToddM's concept. I spend a lot of time fishing lakes just to see if the DNR's data matches what we catch. Most times it does.

That said, all sources of good information are fair game with me, and I'm happy to share what I know most of the time. Some folks think that marking a map on a tough system to help someone shorten the learning curve is bad, I disagree strongly. This place was started as a community source of Muskie fishing information, and that won't change any time soon. Not long from now, it will expand.

Anyone with any old Fishing Hotspots books, if you see "Set the Hook' in or after any work there, that was me. Worked for them for a while when I went back to college.

Well like everything else with fishing I sometime go overboard if there is such a thing. I have fishing hot spot maps (on some lakes I have three versions) and lots of times where I bought a map and never made it to the lake! I also have maps by Mapping Specialists, Greg Bohn, Canadian Hydrographic Maps, Resort maps, and I even got a hand drawn map of the Rainbow Flowage I bought at MCkeever's hardware in Eagle River back in the 80's. Then I have books half dozen of the old Fishing hot spot books of the 70's , all eight of the Fishing the North Country books, and lots of the Sportsman's Connection books , 100 Wisconsin Fishing trips from 1984 (from the editors of Wisconsin Sportsman), Fish Wisconsin with Dan Small , Fishing hot spots "Fishing Wisconsin's Top 50 Muskie Lakes" , Fishing Hot Spots Muskie The Premier Waters Of North America, Vilas County Guide and Fishing Wisconsin's Northwoods both by Dave Strebig ,and last but not least Oneida County Muskie Guide by Russ Smith. Ridding the rainbow in search of Muskie gold!

I have most of those books too! I also remember those paper maps you could buy individually stacked vertically so you had to thumb through them like record albums. All of them are fun reads even today!
