I am looking for a rod at 8’6 or 8’ to throw heavy glides 9-12oz. I have broke 2 mojos right down the middle and looking for options on a stick I can throw all day (light) but can handle multiple years of large glider abuse. I work the lures hard and I have to point out the mojos both lasted about 3 years but after the second brake I am thinking there has to be a better option. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Rod breaks are typically from bruises on the blank or high sticking fish. It is doubtful that the rod is to blame.

I use the chaos shock and awe for this exact application. If you can get the 8'11 chaos one piece I'd recommend that if you are within speedee shipping range. Otherwise the 9'0 tele fishes very similarly. They both have an 18" handle so it will fish a lot like an 8.5 footer

Bought the TI 7'6" XXH for this use, among a couple of lure types, and works really well.

I use my Elk River 9 foot XH for big glides and it works great.

According to Tom Kirkman who is the editor of Rod Builder Magazine, over 95% of all rod failures are due to misuse or abuse. Rod failures due to manufacturer defects are about 2% and occur very early in a rod's life. I'm not sure another brand would fix hard usage on a rod to include numerous small "incidences" of bumping on a gunnel, stepping on them, bumping on other hard surfaces, etc, that bruise the structure of a rod and eventually lead to its failure, sometimes much later where you forget what happened earlier. Since starting to build muskie rods, I have gained a new appreciation of all the things that I used to do that damage rods. While nothing happened at the time, a trip or ten later, the rod would fail under stress. I now take much better of my rods and they take care of me. If you liked the Mojo before, get a new one and take care to treat it gently even though this is a rough sport. Any rod can and will break under hazardous treatment.

This is why my rods live in rod sleeves until its time for action. The only time they come out of them is when tying on leaders or when they have a lure attached which is only when I'm casting. Rods will break on you sometimes but doing your part to limit hazards definitely will help. Having a 10oz bait banging off it doing 75mph across the lake is pretty much a guarantee of disaster, not saying you did this! Best of luck with your purchase

in sleeves, and not bouncing on a console in rough water helps too. rods ride flat on the deck and are in sleeves/reels covered when not being used. Even trolling gear gets the same treatment.

I have always taken the lures off my rods before firing up the motor. If just fishing and using the trolling motor I will leave them on. My thought was that hooks could graze the rods, creating a weak spot. Don't know if this is true. Did see a guy who had a small plastic ring at the bottom of his rod handles where a lure could be attached, keeping the lure away from the rod itself. Really don't know if I should be concerned or not.

You also have to factor in factory workers, warehouse workers, shipping workers, retail workers,. Did someone drop it,bang it off something, drop stuff on top of it. Just this past year I ordered a rod and the box was literally broken in half and taped back together but unbelievably their was nothing wrong with the rod. One thing I don't like about the St. Croix is that they advertise and are proud that 32 people touch your rod during build. Personally I'd rather have that only be like 5 with 2 of them being qc. Just gives way more opportunities for accidents to occur while going in and out of containers and getting moved around.
