Has anybody here caught or have heard of catching a muskie on a centerpin and float rod combo? Seems like it would be an interesting endeavor. I don't think it would be impossible, just difficult. davemp

It possible to do but probably not wise to target them with light line and small live bait prone to being swallowed. To each their own, but a small sucker on a circle hook under a float would do it. I don’t see the need for extended drag free floats on muskies which would be the reason for using a center pin reel.

What about a Tenkara muskie? Has it ever been done?

Yep it's called a figure 8. Don't give the youtube kids any more stupid challenge ideas.

Well if there's a reel on the rod it wouldn't be Tenkara. Would be a fun challenge I'd think.

Years ago some local clowns were targeting muskies with noodle rods and playing them to total exhaustion . Many died. We don't use heavy equipment because muskies are a super fish it's because of the size of our lures , to get a fish out of heavy cover for a quick trip to the boat and a release before total exhaustion.

My point exactly, You can catch them on the other equipment but why? I do target them with a 10 weight fly rod and Heavy bass swimbait rods for specific baits but it's still reasonable tackle to land them quickly and release them. I've hooked plenty on lighter multispecies gear but personally wouldn't specifically target them on lighter stuff.

Maybe I'm missing something but who said anything about light line? I'm not sure how one could play them out to exhaustion with only 12' of line. I really don't know that much about the art of Tenkara, but it seems reasonable to me that you could get the fish into the net in a matter of seconds with the right line/ rod. I agree with you that the above scenario is unacceptable. I would personally never target muskies with less than 80# line and a strong leader.

It seems to me that some of the original cane poles with a big fly tied on would be very similar to this Tenkara stuff...don't know. I don't know about centerpin either, sorry to hijack the thread. Cheers!
