Posts: 9 | What weight rod do you guys use for cowgirls and supermodels? Specifically TI and St. croix and/or chaos tackle.

Posts: 11 Location: Blaine, Minnesota | I'm new to musky fishing (this will be my second year) and on a budget and been thinking about buying an Okuma EVX at mainly the 9' but I can't decide on the H (2-10oz) or the XH (4-16oz) but after digging around I'm leaning towards the XH. This rod would be for larger bucktails, but would it also work for lures like cranks or topwater? I already have an 8'6 XH rod (not Okuma tho) for medium-sized rubber and it's a little stiff for blades. Anyone have any experience with these rods? I still haven't found an answer I'm looking for in the older forums.

Posts: 57 Location: Zimmerman | Defiantly the 9’3” okuma Xh for throwing bigger bucktails. It can even handle pounders if you let the rod do work. It’s not too stiff to throw topwater and cranks. The heavy would work for smaller cranks, top, bucktails. The xh 9’3” is my favorite okuma rod.

Posts: 186 | I just finished my first true year. I have both of the okuma 9'3"s h and xh. I chose them bc of the price. Decent rods. I have the heavy paired with an Abu toros61 and the extra heavy paired with a lexa 400hd 7.1. They both have 80lb master braid. They both have mod fast action. I bought the heavy for a big blade/crankbait rod which it works ok for.. The xheavy will be better for figure 8s and ripping the bigger blades and 9-10' crankbaits. As of now I'm stuck on the banks so I don't get to figure 8 much. Its either so shallow I can see whats around or im balancing on boulders. I have tossed husky tails 1.5oz with it about 70 yards, double 8 spanky bucks about 50-60 yards, and I only get about 40 yards or less out of 10s and triple 13s. Am I the only 1 that doesn't get much distance out of bigger blades??? The only top waters i have are some wooden wtd and the bigger whopper plopper ( all around 3oz). I can cast those 60+ yards all day long, sometimes closer to 100yards. All with a full spool! As for the person tossing pounders with it, tossing regular shallow medusa 7oz and mag super d 8oz seems to be at its upper limits. Although I'm new to using heavier baits with graphite rods I guess I just have to get more experience and trust with them or they just can't handle the weight? Looking back at it now I would've skipped the heavy and bought a more powerful rod for heavier baits and used the xheavy for most of the midsized baits and big blades. Might just be the 2 i got but it seems the xheavy is a better caster. Depending on the type of top waters you toss, that shorter rod might be better. Walking the dog for 60 yards on a 9' rod will wear on you. I ended up picking up a 7'6" for those style baits for Christmas. Hope this helps out some, any others questions just ask and I'll share from my experience with them
