hello guys, I would like to buy a Supernatural ... to tow in the spring on suspended pikes do you recommend the headlock or the mattlock? what are the differences between the two baits? seeing the very high cost and considering that I have to get it to Italy and therefore with shipping, duty and taxes I will well exceed $ 130, so I would like to understand what is special about this crank and how to make it perform at its best
Tnx

I’d go Mattlock if you intend to run it in a spread, the Headlock needs speed to get the best. Mattlock runs an any speed including slow without going dead, I’ve only experience with the 12” Mattlock and 12” Headlock so can’t comment on the other sizes.

at the beginning of the season I runs between 2.4mph and 3mph, so do you recommend the mattlock for this speed, correct?

Mattlock is ideal at those speeds. The difference between the headlock and mattlocks is the thickness. So the mattlock gets more erratic and hunts even at a lower speed (3.2 - 3.5 will typically start it wandering). The headlock take around 4.5-5mph to get moving erratically. Usually the convention is that mattocks are better in the spring/fall because they can be run at slower speeds and headlocks are great for trolling quickly at high speeds when the water is warmer. But this isn't always the case- headlocks have a very subtle movement at slow speeds, which can sometimes be good. But generally the thing that makes these baits so great is the fact that they do wander, so it's ideal to have it in the speeds where it does. 10" vs 12": seems like usually the 10" models gets moving erratically at a slightly lower speed than the 12" models, and maybe dart out a tiny bit more too. If I could have one supernatural trolling bait, or even only one muskie bait, it'd be a 10" Mattlock in walleye color.

The 10" Mattlock is a favorite of mine too. Good luck out there, hope it gets chewed!

Yeah, the 8.5" models are relatively new, and many folks seem to really like them. I don't use them much; I feel like the larger baits get bit more where I fish. The 15" model is also very very good- when I first fished it I thought it didn't swim properly. At high speeds it swims like you'd expect a crankbait to, but at moderate or slower speeds it sort of weirdly lumbers along, almost like it can't get going properly. But it's at these speeds where it swims weird that the fish love it, surprisingly it's probably my best bait for numbers and size of fish this past season.

what do you mean by slow or moderate speed?

Don't remember the numbers as well as I do the other headlocks/mattlocks, but I want to say that at around 3.4 mph or so was the sweet spot for my 15" mattlock, where it sort of switches back and forth between its weird swinging wobble and the consistent "crankbait" like action, and the fish seemed to like that in-between. Really tough to explain; it doesn't move like the other supernaturals.
But yeah, at your 2.4mph and 3mph, and it being your first supernatural, I'd go with the 10" Mattlock. Good luck, catch some big Italian pike!!
