I'm wearing my M1 jacket, flying out of Escanaba, and an a old Yooper lady comes up, pokes me hard in the chest with a sharp, boney finger and says with a scowl on her face. "A muskie killed my husband." Knowing the local dialect I respond, "Oh Wah! No way, eh!?" She says......

"My husband spent years and years on Chicagon Lake, it's right down the road, trying to catch a 50" muskie. One day I get a call, they found my husband dead in his boat. Heart attack. There was a dead 50" muskie in the boat with him. A muskie killed my husband."

True story.

Did she mention what bait they found in the fish's mouth?

Now, true story here: when I was just out of school, I worked for a spring and summer for an old couple on their farm. It was a true farm experience, the wife would start the woodburning cook stove in the morning and by one we'd come in for a dinner of home killed chicken, deer, local beef...Anyway, the old man was a handsome guy and had had two heart attacks and still worked like a mule. He had me and another fellow renovate an old log home on the property. We rebuilt the chimney, made it livable, and he rented it out to two young college girls after I quit. Every month he'd go collect the rent, sometimes come back with a check and sometimes not. His last attack was one of those 'not' times. It was a very private funeral.m

Unfortunately not the only person to die of a heart attack after catching a 50.

Yep he was the one I was referring to. Muskiefirst almost lost two that day. Tragic as it was.

Do you think the guy didn't release it because he wanted everyone to know he caught a 50 before he died ?

Had a family friend who died at a bowling alley. Everybody was standing around him laughing, saying "Hey Charlie, quit screwing around! Yeah, that was funny. Now come on, it's my turn, get up!!"

Charlie was dead before he hit the ground...

Sad deal no matter how it happens, but it sure beats wasting away in an old folks home!

Speaking of which, I've been wondering if there are 'old folks homes' that cater to fishermen? I know of one assisted living place near Cave Run that I've had my eye on, what do you all have up North? m

Maybe in poor taste... You should've told her if she was doing her job she would've taken him out in the bedroom and never gave that musky the chance!

I always thought (hoped) he recovered, and lived to fish again.. "Upon his return to sleep, Santiago dreams of his youth—of lions on an African beach."

Hemingway left that wide open didn't he?

I was hoped so too...but later came to believe his "sleep" was in the Pauline sense.

One of my great uncle's (my grandpa's bother) died at Deer camp. Everyone in camp got up and was going to set up a drive and he was not feeling well and stayed in camp. Everyone come back in the afternoon and he was there dead in has cot.
He was in his 80's so not a bad way to go.

Chuckski's post reminded me of a UP deer camp experience I hope to never forget.

We had 2 cabins and about 8 guys, including 3 guys in their late 70's. 3rd night of camp and everyone is going to hit the bars in a nearby small town. I'm a driver and I'm getting impatient with two of my riders, 2 of the 3 old farts, they're ****ing around out behind my truck. I get out to see what's the hold up and find they are trading drugs. Yes, drugs, but not get high drugs. Instead, one guy is trading a tab of his Nitro Glycerin heart attack medicine for a hit of the other guy's Viagra.

They were both hoping to get lucky with the ladies in town you see. And they wanted to be ready if the lucky turned unlucky.

My Dad's dying of bone cancer at the moment. It is extremely painful. I wish he would just have a heart attack in his sleep. We're not given a choice but I think quick is the better way to go.

Well the lucky guy could have been cursed and died with her in the boat.
