Just wondering what the best and most successful trolling lures over 12" long you guys use and how much do they cost.

Grandma's and jakes have been a staple in your neck of the woods.

Just curious do the baits have to be that big? Big being relative. I had a buddy scoff at me for putting out an 8" jake. I told him same profile just 2" shorter plus I didn't have any 10"ers. It was very very late in the season. He was up, it fired 10min later and he held. 47" fish that was well over 30lbs for a pic.

I once caught a mid 30"s Menominee River pike that had just recently been chomped, shook and released by a REALY big fish, prol a muskie. The pike was around 10#, still bleeding from the tooth holes on both sides. The tooth holes looked like a cartoon. So, yes, huge lures for huge fish.

One of my most productive trollers is a 10" Jake, modified to suspend including lead thread wrapped on the shank of the rear treble. That guy swings so wide you wouldn't believe it. The thump would spook ya.

Yes big lures can catch big fish. I've caught large trout fishing for Walleyes and Northern here in Colorado. But at the same time put any sized lure at the right depth and you can can get bit. Tom Gelb's big girl had a five inch shiner in it's stomach.

13" Grandmas and 14" Jakes can be good too

15" mattlock was one of my most productive lures this past season per hours run, all season. At moderate speeds has a weird action that's kind of different from other supernaturals (sort of like it's having trouble getting wobbling, sort of strangely lumbers along), but fish seem to love it!

12" mattlocks and headlocks have been my staple trolling baits on the big pond. The tullibee are huge out there.

Jakes, grandmas and raiders catch fish no doubt. When I'm home in Wisconsin they're always in they arsenal along with the big baits. These lakes are mainly panfish and sucker forage.

Slammer 12" Model. Second time running this bait, Mrs. stuck a fitty. Great action, and moves a ton of water...….and the plastic tails make them commit...….Price range $30-32

Thorne Bros. has some sick colors in this Bait!!!

I cast these but never thought to troll them. How deep do they run?

RL, I believe Slammer has a depth running chart for his trolling lures, Check out slammers web page.

Rod angle, line diameter, speed, all factors in depth control.

The Musky 360 app has a depth chart for the 12" sans tail. The only chart I could find on the Slammer site was for the 5" model.

I tried one of these and could not get it to run past 3 mph without blowing out. Do you troll faster with them? Are they finicky to tune? I've read that they wander/walk pretty good - do you see that? With the tail on too?

To the OP - 12" Mattlock here. If you watch for sales/discounts and pick opportune times to buy, you can get them for about $75. On any given day, $90-100.

I had read that some had luck trolling Swimin Dawg. I tried and it either had no action or it blew out, rolled. Tried different speeds but never really got it to run well. Any suggestions?

obviously all baits R built differently, some built for speed, some work better at slower speeds. Slammers have great roll, but Mine R used more in cloudier water, and slower speeds. Usually the 12” er I’m moving in that 3.5-4. Yes, they R finicky to tune, but I think that is the reason for better roll, action!

The 10” shallow lip, I’ve done some 4.5. And the 4” deep shad to 5 mph.

The tail really looks Natural, and yes, seems to act like a rudder and calm bait down slightly. Like the tail on the 12”er.

Last couple years the 10" & 12" Slammers and 10" & 14" Jakes have produced well in the cold to coldest water. Have also had a lot of fish in the boat on all of Duff's baits... Headlocks & Mattlocks 10"+.
