Like refried beans, I had to do this lure twice. Didn't like the original looks, sanded the whole thing back to wood and started over. 12", basswood, two rattle chambers, lacquer and holographic foil.

Any tips on getting enough weight in those giant baits? I don't have a lead pot and I have trouble getting enough weight in an 8" bait.

Have you tried Bullet weights used for plastics fishing?

For weighting I drill a 1/2" diameter hole approximately 1" deep and fill with lead, but then I have a lead pot for pouring. Without a pot you might try filling a similar hole with lead shot and epoxy. You might have to use a couple of holes since the lead shot/epoxy mixture is always going to be lower density than poured lead. Normally I employ an aluminum lip which also adds some weight although on this lure the lip is 1/4" plexiglass.

Another way you could do it is use a torch and a big spoon or ladle to melt the lead. It melts pretty easy, just pour it in the hole. I hammered a pouring spout into an old metal soup ladle I had to make pouring slightly easier. Just remember to have ventilation with the lead.

Great lures Gringo! Always love the creations you come up with.
