Location: Vilas | Seen last week one of the Minocqua Wi bait dealers post a report on a different site.... "Looks like suckers will be in short supply this year" .......no explanation given. Normal excuses are "water was too high this year" or "the water is too low this year" blah blah blah...... Im going to troll more and vertical jig more...they can keep their suckers

Location: Clintonville, WI | My first shot at getting an answer to Mark's post was this past Sunday......$15 each for two 15" and $13 each for two 12" suckers.
None had masks on nor were they treated to be COVID free so these must be the cheaper ones.
Across all sizes of suckers, a quick count looked like there were about 75-80 in stock. Good inventory at that moment, but that can obviously get bought up quickly when the sucker bite is in full force (we had no action on the suckers) but I got no indication of how supply restocking is expected to go this season.

| Seems like a simple case of supply and demand to me. Capitalism at work. If it was very profitable, supply would increase and eventually prices would come down. |

Agreed.
It especially hurts up here. Why would a supplier drive another 3 hours (round trip) from Minocqua or Hayward area to bring suckers to Ashland, when not that many are being purchased? |

I've had some luck with a jig and a white gulp grub in one of the rivers near where we fish. Fresh caught suckers aren't like the ones you buy. You need to weight them to keep them down for starters, and they are difficult to rig since you need three hands to keep them still. They also generate an awful lot of excrement. The good news is they either get eaten right away or they last all day long. I've never had one die in one piece.
The other bonus is they are actually pretty fun to catch.
We haven't done this is a few years because of VHS and the rules regarding transfer of live bait, but if you can find a river that dumps into a lake you intend to fish my understanding is its perfectly legal to catch them in the river and fish with them in the lake. |

| Years ago, would go on a little bridge over a trout stream in northern WI and just bounce a ball of worms on a small hook, with a split shot just above it and pick up suckers. Sometimes would pick up a bonus brown trout as well. |
