Hey guys, heading to Big V in 3 weeks. We plan on fishing Bass and pike Half the time since we have heard the Musky fishing ain’t like it was 10 years ago which was my dad and I’s last visit to Vermillion. We are staying at the Casino since my dad is 82 and need some of the comforts of air conditioning and a comfy bed. How would you guys suggest on attacking the pike and SM?? I was thinking of finding some shallow weedy bays and throwing some old school Johnson silver minnow for pike, and doing the Ned rig thing for SM on rocky points and islands. I have never drop shotted before, but have heard that is a good tactic in big boulders which from what I remember the Big V is full of. Any advice would be much appreciated to help get my Dad on as many fish as possible. Not sure how many of these trips he had left in him. Tight lines....

Big bass size spinnerbaits have worked well for Pike for me. What you mentioned will work for smallies, try pitching senkos and small cranks along rock edges and on rocky shorline docks and lifts.

I've been using Violent Strike spinerbaits there for years with excellent results.

Spinnerbaits and small topwaters like love them. We used to catch alot of smallies along rocky shorelines with the medium lipped bill dance fat free shad crankbait. Made by bomber still one of the best ever cranks.

You’ve got a pretty good game plan! Any of the shallow weedy bays will have a lot of pike. They’ll bite just about anything you’d like to throw. Stuntz and Everett always seem to have eager pike in them and they’re easy to get to from where you’re at. Everett has weeds scattered throughout the entire bay. You could fish aimlessly through there and bump into fish. The larger smallies do seem to sit in water deeper than 6 feet this time of year. Finding those big boulders does work. If dropshotting isn’t your thing, using a crank bait can also be effective (something like a rapala dt6 or a deeper running jerkbait). Late and early in the day some of those bigger fish will slide up in the reefs/structure and topwater becomes effective. If you like fishing shorelines, there’s great smallie water on and around cherry and raspberry island.

If you're looking for a walleye fish fry, our group was up two years ago in August and we had bright sunshine and no wind for most of our trip.

We did the best lindy rigging with half a crawler on sand in Big Bay. No big fish but plenty of eaters. Bite was best in the morning until 10am. Big Bay glass calm is something to see (and rare).

For smallies, sometimes you will find them shallow in reeds. They are in there feeding on crayfish. Brown/orange wacky worms worked well.
