I am in the camp of holding the net bag and scooping the fish. I see so many leaving the bag loose, uncontrolled in the water and scooping the fish. Seeing that so many do it, what is the advantage of doing it that way?

I fish solo a lot, so I put weights on the bottom of my net bag so it will drop quickly and I can scoop the net under the fish with less chance of a hang up. Mostly. m

My Frabile has a rubber gizmo that the bottom of the bag can hook on. Once the fish is in the bag it pulls the net out of the gizmo. To date it hasn't failed yet.

I’ve seen it done both ways but I just can’t figure out how the bag gets in the way of anything. I’ve never caught it on the side of the boat, or ever hooked a fish on the outside of the bag. I just have the net ready over the side of the boat and scoop. The bag just stays where it needs to be.

Always hold the bag when fishing with a partner. I've had the bag snag on boat cleats and other stuff when trying to net a fish. The net doesn't touch the water until the fish is ready, I've had some large fish swim into the bag and botch the net job, Sometimes they see the bag and freak out. Head first fast deep scoop and let go of the bag.

Solo different story, almost gave myself several heart attacks while trying to net monster fish solo.. hard to hold the bag and scoop and hold rod at the same time.

Net clamped to shaft until it goes in the water. Why leave it floating around?

I think holding the bag until the fish is being led into the net is important if the net needs to be quickly moved at the last second. With the net fully in the water, maneuverability is limited or at least slowed. I've seen several wave-offs that are much easier if your bag isn't in the water. It's easy to drop the bag as you make the scoop. Solo is a different story.

If I can (netting for someone else), I always hold the bag.

One thing I've noticed is that when someone with less experience goes to net a fish while holding the bag, sometimes they forget to let go. Then the hook gets caught in the bag immediately and sometimes causes disaster. I've seen it happen in videos and one time happened to me personally.

Maybe what is on the side of the boat impacts whether to hold the bag or not? A couple years ago I was fishing with my nephew in his new boat. He had Down East rod holders mounted on the sides, even though we were casting. Even holding the bag until I got it over the side, I darned near got it tangled in those. He trolls a lot on Green Bay, so he leaves them mounted and is used to working around them. Me, not so much. My boat has retractable cleats and no rod holders except when dragging a sucker. I netted another fish the next day for him and was very aware to clear the holders and hold the bag until in position.

Some good discussion here but I was looking for someone to say why they specifically leave the net and bag in the water before they net the fish, never seen anyone not let go of the net bag before scooping but I suppose it could happen.

What I see with keeping the bag in the water is the bag is out of position as the boat moves it is possible and have seen the bag out in front of the net. This seems like and have seen this cause issues with netting fish. The bag doesn't seem to be in a good position and you cannot control it when a fish takes an evasive move. I can understand why you would by yourself, you would need 3 hands. But if you are not, what is the reason?

If you leave the bag in the water the fish will head right for the net and you got hooks in the outside of the net.
Head first and don't reach!
I fish by myself a lot and smaller fish leave in the water and just twist the hook out with a longnose.
Then with the Pike every hook on the will be in the fish both mouth and in the side. So give them the snake grip and remove all 9 points of the hooks.
With larger fish park um parallel to the boat swing the net parallel to the boat and get them head first .
I have a big Frabill I choke up on he handle almost by the y and hold the bag of the net with my pinky.

The only time I hold the bag is when I forget to put the plug in at the ramp. Then I hold her feet while she’s hanging over the transom trying to find the hole underneath.

I'm guessing the "bag" doesn't read this forum?

I let the bag hang free. In my mind, the bag is less likely to lay flat and catch a hook on the way to scoop. When the bag hits the water first you’re adding volume to your net. I sometimes cringe watching net jobs online. Some people will hold the bag and stab at the fish rather than letting the bag open up on the way to scoop. I don’t let the bag sit in the water prior to netting, it’s just not in my hand as I’m deciding when to scoop. It’s good to be quick and decisive, but the fish needs some space in the bag or it’ll wave goodbye pretty quick.

This is good and what I was looking for! So you are not holding the bag but don't have the net in the water correct?

Or just fish exclusively with lacrosse players, we are quite good at a quick scoop.

Nevermind that deadhead lacrosse fellow, he's prol all dizzy on patchouli. When the fish stalls at boatside lift its head with your rod and at the same time scoop it up from behind. Tail in first but big fish will sorta fold into the net. Planning head first is asking for hooks to catch with most of the fish free and say goodbye. Deadheads are insufferable, sheesh.

Exactly. Net doesn’t touch the water until it’s time to scoop.

Todd I can only give you the reason that I hold the bag. It's because I can hold the hoop closer to the water and still have bag out of the water. This allows me to react quicker if a quick net job is needed due to lightly hooked fish. Usually it's not necessary.

I just watched the Lake X lures 2020 promo video and saw someone do exactly what I was talking about. Forgot to let go of the bag. Watch that video and you'll see what not to do on a bunch of fish

I netted a 53 a couple yrs ago while fishing with a buddy. We had a go pro mounted to the handle. When i went to scoop for the fish the bag got caught on the mount of the go pro and i remember him saying " whats wrong with the bag" for a second i wasnt sure if i forgot to let go or not. It all worked out but i think if i would of let go earlier it wounlt of gotten caught.
