Posts: 383 | Picked up a used (but looks never used) Muskie Innovations spinning rod. Thought it would be good for my youngest son who hasn't used bait casters much as well as the occasional non-musky hunter guest. Anyone have a good recommendation for a decent spinning reel? Thanks.

Posts: 72 | I'd stick with Shimano and go around 3000 size with braid. Any bigger than that and your son (depending on age) may not like the size/weight. Just buy what you can afford. I really like the sahara line and up.

Posts: 760 | I'd think it would be important to consider balancing the rod with the reel. Considering the rod is a spinning model musky rod, I think a 3000 might be a little small. When I read up on what size reels most guys use,its the 4000 size. I'm in the market for a spinning set up as well but I'm going with a 5000 size. There are a ton of options out there, and weight is a factor. I've narrowed my choice down to a Penn Battle or Fierce III at a little over 19 ounces, or the lighter Abu Elite Max 60 at 13 ounces. The outfit would be used mostly for jigging and smaller baits and some would say a 5000 size reel is overkill and maybe it is, but I look at as a durability standpoint. Spinning reels designed for saltwater are tough! Kdawg

Posts: 343 | I use a Shimano 4000 Stradic and have landed tigers up to 50 inches, and purebreds to 47.5 inches. It is my main choice when fishing smaller baits and jigs.

Posts: 1516 | I also use a Shimano 4000. Whst I have found is that the set up does not handle large heavy baits very well Lie true tiger gamer said smaller baits and jigs is the way to go

Posts: 32 Location: Rockford, IL USA | My Dad could never get used to a baitcaster so I bought him a Shimano Stradic 4000 with braid and it has served him well.

Posts: 760 | Hooked, when you read this, help us out by giving the musky rod length and specs. This would make it easier to match up a reel. If the rod is anything like the St.Croix Premier spinning rod, 8ft. 1-5 ounce lures, Angling Edge pro, Jeremy Smith has a nice you tube video describing his set up. Kdawg

Posts: 1100 | I use a Sustain, or Twinpower SW 4000, depending on which gear ratio i feel for that day, on a LT bass swimbait rod that i changes a couple of eyelets on, and i love the set up, its amazing for smaller baits.

Posts: 752 | I have a spinning rod built on a LT St Croix Flippin' stick blank. I bounced around from a 5000 size to a 3000 and currently use a 4000 sized Sustain. The 4000 seems to be the right combo of weight, drag LBS and size (IMHO).

Posts: 612 | Shimano Stradic 3000 may be a bit undersized for musky. Had one break the gears while running from boat. Shimano Stradic 4000 is great and not oversized for teens, etc. Great reels (IMO). Had trouble with cheaper Shimano's.
