Posts: 585 Location: Gaithersburg, Maryland | I have two sets of rail-mounted Downeaster's mounted in my boat (two on each side, front & back sides) and one on the back for the propwash. These are the powder-coated type. The back ones work fine. The problem: I'm having a problem with the one's in the front jumping out of the holders when I either get hung up or have a fish strike. This never happened in the past with the non-powder type. Anybody else have this problem? If so, what to do about it? Edited by muskiekid 11/7/2003 7:42 AM

Posts: 2089 | What rods are you using?I've found that the trigger on some rods is too wide at the base (where it meets the handle)to slip inside that little groove.I've got the same holders and experienced the same thing.I've got 2 8' Classic Cats from Croix and one has a narrow trigger and one is wide.I pull the rod back a bit and the holder seems to settle in better. Don't want to lose a fish let alone a $ 200 combo. Hope this helps. If not, may be a problem with the casting of the holder. I'm going to the garage now to install 2 heavy duty holders by RAM. Still love the down east though.Good luck. Steve

Posts: 1137 Location: Holly, MI | I have the non-powder coated ones but wanted to upgrade to the coated ones. Is the problem with only one or two, otherwise they are fine? I'll bet wherever you bought them they will swap you for more and send them back. The Downeasters are too good of a product not to stand behind it. The non coated ones can corrode (spell?)and be hard to open up on rod release. Are the powder coated ones less likly to do this?

| That is a good point about the trigger on some rods being too wide. If this is a problem simply puit the rod in the holder on the handle in front of the reel. The angle you have your rods at may also be a problem. In the past if I have had the rode angled down too fay with shallower baits the rod can pop out. Also make sure the rod is all the way down into the holder and not only half way in. Have had guys in the past not put the rod all the way down in and lose their rod. | |||

Posts: 585 Location: Gaithersburg, Maryland | OK, I will check some of your points/ideas out. The rods are not the trigger type. However, they are very thick in the butt section. Could be that is the problem. However, it only exists in the front holders (angle problem?). Hard to say. Either way, I don't want to lose a fish or the combo. Stay tuned. Thanks, Tom
