I'm thinkin about getting creative and making my own rigs. One of the compnents I want to copy is the big pin thinger on the hook, I like that.

I can't remember exactly how it went, is the hook "T'd", then the safety pin soldered, or is one prong removed totally?

if someone has a pic of the hook, could they post it pls??

thx much.

Greg, I don't have a pic of the hook, but the hook is T'd and then the pin soldered to the hook. Hope that helps.

Greg,

I just bought a small Herbie Tues. The barbs had not been modified. A safety pin had been soldered between 2 of the barbs a seemed to pin nicely to the fish. The clasp was at the eye of the hook so when you close it you're not as likely to get stuck. Good luck!

Hey Greg!

I make these myself for my own use and I "T" the hooks. BUT, I also then take the two hooks closest to the pin and bend the points slightly up. What this does is when the sucker is pinned and you set the hook the point will be less likely to drive into the sucker. Works for me.

And it is a bitch sometimes to get the pin to soilder to the hooks. Make sure you make up a few because at times the weld will give when a fish hits etc.

The trick to getting the solder to stick is to rough up the hook and safety pin and then make sure you use solder paste to dope them up a bit.  Without the paste the solder does not stick well at all.

Would the safety pin be considered a "lure" here in MN

Greg'r...

Forget the solder and drive your butt down to Farm/Fleet and buy some JB Weld or even better JB Kwik.

This is a two part epoxy designed for bonding to metal surfaces. I have fixed carburators and hydraulic cylinders with this stuff and it's great.
The "Kwik" version drys in like 10 minutes.

If you do decide to solder the hook/pin together heres a few tips on soldering.

1. pieces need to be clean and free of oil, etc.
2. both pieces need to be heated evenly... the hook will take more heat than the pin so apply most of your heat to the hook first.
3. When your buying the solder at farm and fleet..walk down the same aisle about 10 feet and get a card of JB Weld..:)

Soldering works but it can be a pain in the arss as stated in earlier post.

easy works for me...JB Kwik it is!!

just mix it like epoxy eh and it'll stick em together??

if I'm driving to Fleet, might as well wash some baits on Wissota or Holcombe. I got a long weekend off and the ice and buddies plans have got it all screwed up.

you in?
