Hello,
not muskie related, but after searching internet with no results I thought I'd turn here. When do eagles typically leave the upnorth to head south? Typically. Saw two this morning in Central WI, and one over a week ago. is this timing normal? Thanks

You probably just saw some local eagles. We even have nesting pairs in the Chicago suburbs now.

I don't think they will head south until waters north lock up. Usually end up with several that winter along the fox river down here by me.

I was fishing V a few years back in Mid November and saw about 20 or so flying around Orman Island and making all kinds of racket... The next day dead silence... two days later the lake was iced up.

Had a very similar experience last year on the chain where I live in Oneida County. Was out in November, and the pair of eagles that nest on the lake I was on were quite active and two days later the chain started to ice over. I have seen eagles around well after the lake in front of my house freezes. However, the channel across the lake does not completely freeze until January or February so maybe that keeps them around longer.

Many eagles stay in northern Minnesota all winter.

Will keep my eyes open. We live 35 minutes from two flowages and rarely see an eagle unless it's spring or fall.

Some years, some of the eagles in the twin cities stay all year. Even years when they leave, they only leave for a month or two, and migrate to places a few hours south, on the Mississippi, where there is open water. They come back and start nesting before things even thaw out.

My sister lives just south of Alma and during the winter there are dozens of eagles along the Mississippi in that area.
