Location: Girdwood, Alaska | Thinking of trying to make some of my own spinnerbait heads, and was wondering if this mold will work for what I am trying to do. I am looking at number 3368 (link below), which will make 1 1/2, 2, and 2 1/2 oz heads. Only problem is that it says it only accepts .040-.041 wire.... which is WAY too light. I would probably want to use .060 wire for them. Does anybody have any experience with this mold? Will it work with heavier wire? If not, what are you guys using for your molds? Thank you, any help would be great!

Location: In the slop! | A-ROZ, this is a popular mold for muskie size spinnerbaits. You should be able to drill the hole for the wire form for larger wire without much diffaculty. A number 51 drill, .067 inch, should be about right for .062 wire. By drilling slightly oversize it will let the mold vent. Stamina has great .062 wire that comes pre-straightened, then you can bend the forms with a round nosed pliers any way you like. |

If you buy the Do-it mold # 3368, you will have to enlarge the wire slots, as well as the hook slots, assuming you want hooks bigger than 5/0 or 6/0! |

| A few drags with a hacksaw blade opens up wire slots and hook slots very easy. |

| I too would go with the mold from Luremaking.com, they also have the .062 wire forms & the hooks. It will cost more to ship from them, but it will be ready to use when you get it. |

| The simplest thing is to invest about $30 and get an electric Hotpot. It holds about 4# of lead. Plug it in, wait 15 minutes and pour. The guys who pour thousands at a time have the bottom pour furnaces or the bigger melters that you ladle dip out of. Those are a bigger investment. I have had my two Hotpots for 30+ years now and all I've done is replace a terminal here and there. They are perfect for the hobbiest. I think Fleet Farm and Gander carry them over where they have the Do-It molds. |

| The Do-It x-heavy size spinnerbait mold, model SJ-3H-X (#3368, 1½, 2, & 2½ oz.) works well for muskie spinnerbaits if modified. I used a 1/16” drill bit to enlarge the wire slot, and some ‘number’ sized bits for the hook slots. I also trimmed the mold face with a Dremel so that the hook points would fit (see area circled in red).
The muskie spinnerbait mold that Luremaking sells has some other differences. The eye sockets are smaller, and the skirt collar is thicker and a bit longer ( the Luremaking head is the dull coloured one on the bottom)
I bought the standard mold and modified it for my own purposes. I prefer the larger eye sockets, and the fact that I can use 9/0 (2 oz. head) and 11/0 (2½ oz. head) hooks.

| Can you run a wire through the head instead of a hook? I would like to make longer spinner baits with a wire that continues through the head providing room for larger skirts and treble hooks. |

| First thing I would do is buy some unpainted spinnerbaits from LPO and see if this is what you want to invest in. Then it might be cost wise to purchase them than making them, no pots or lead to mess with and no hook inventory just paint ,beads and blades.
I went through this awhile back and every time you screw up its time wasted remelting
them. Just my 2 cents.
