Remember reading somewhere about a great early fall spinnerbait bite as fish move a bit shallower with chillier nights. Any thoughts on whether we might see such a pattern in Northern Wisconsin first week of September? Is that too early?

From my experience the faster and more drastic the drop in water temperature, the quicker the move shallow. The years when the temps are over 80 and we get a big cold front and the water drops 10 degrees or so it really pushes fish shallow quicker and they are active. This year we didn’t have the high temps so I think the move shallow won’t be as drastic. Some fish will stay out and some fish will move shallow. Regardless, I’m heading up to the cabin mid week and will be looking in shallow weeds as a starting place throwing top water and blades. Good luck!!!

Keith got a couple yesterday on his Violent Strike spinnerbaits. We do really well on spinnerbaits as the water cools, and the water has been cooling down fast. When I left Vermilion Saturday it was under 70.

That bite was good at the beginning of September last year.

Then there was a week long warm spell that ran the water temp back up to the mid 70s from the low to mid 60s.

For this shallow water transition is it primarily shallow shoreline type water, points or would it apply equally to sunken islands in the middle of the lake? Monday just before dark I got one over the top of a shoreline connected shallow rock reef.

Besides spinnerbaits, this could be the most exciting time for topwater action. Kdawg

Back in late 70’s we identified this time of year as “frog migration” in northern MN. Same thing?
