Location: Madison, WI | What kind of rod do you guys recommend for sucker fishing? Right now I'm just using one of my older St Croix Premiers, but it's only a 7' MH. So it's way under gunned. Wanted to pick up a new more efficient rod for this upcoming fall. I see Musky Shop makes one of their Shield rods for Live Bait Trolling, not sure if that's made specifically for sucker fishing. What are you guys using and recommend? Thanks! |

Location: Madtown, WI | I exclusively use rods that I accidentally stepped on and broke ~6" off the tip. Put on a new tip top that fits and you have yourself a perfectly fine sucker rod. The heavier the better imo, you want a nice stiff backbone to break free of sucker and drive hooks home. I would not spend much coin trying to find the "perfect" sucker rod. There are some good enough sucker rods on the buy/sell forum right now. |

| Steve, you just re purposed a rod of mine that met that exact fate. I put a bigger tip top on it, but I never new what to do with it after that.

You have to buy the tip and install it yourself actually.  |

Location: Madtown, WI | If I were in your shoes, I'd probably spend some cash upgrading a primary rod and then demote something else you have to suckers OR at least buy something that could serve multiple purposes. My sucker rods are XH 6'10", XXXH 7'4.5", and XH 8'6". My preference would be probably ~8' but I wouldn't hesitate to jump on those 8'6" musky anglers in the buy/sell forum for that price. |

Location: North/Central WI | I love my Chaos Assault trolling/livebait rods for suckers. Available in 8' & 9' 1 piece and 10' 2 piece. I like the 9' for suckers but I'm sure the 8' works well too. They are blend of graphite and fiberglass which seems to be perfect for sucker hooksets. Plenty of backbone but a soft enough tip that the hooks don't pull out of lightly hooked fish. They aren't real expensive...I think around $120. I always thought rods that are only fiberglass were a little soft when setting the hook. I used older XH - XXXH graphite casting rods in the past and they worked fine for the most part. Typically the heavier action graphite casting rods don't have much tip and that could result in a few more lost fish. |

Location: Contrarian Island | no idea if they are still made but the Musky Innovations 9 foot "trolling/livebait" rod has been great for me. I have a fleet of them.. Jeff Hanson use to get his hands on them and sell them might be worth dropping him a line. |
