Subject: Odd Encounter on The Water

Couple times a month we kayak on different rivers and lakes with a group of retired couples. Yesterday it was the WI River between Sugar Camp and Eagle River. I and another guy had paddled a little further before turning around so we were the tail end of a group of 11. A boat came from behind us and I went towards the right bank, the other guy went left. The boat pulled up about 100 yards ahead of me and immediately cast bobber and bait towards some downed trees on edge of the river. I paddled to the middle of the river, planning to just paddle past. However, just as I go to them the boat driver turned and did a two handed cast with a spinning rod and slip bobber rig right at my bow. I was about 50 feet away and him being a scrawny guy, he only got it half way. He then began to rant about how couldn't we see they were fishing, blah, blah.
Caught me by surprise. I said, "gee, sorry, didn't know you owned the river". He went into another rant about how we had better be off the river before they moved or he would swamp us. I smiled and said "see you at the landing slick". The other two guys made a real effort to stare at their bobbers. The guy I was with asked me what he was shouting about and I told him. He said "I think that guy is a guide."

A short time later at the landing he blew past, rocking a group of kids that were with a youth group paddling the river.

I guess I could have paddled to the other side of the river but given that they seemed focused on the downed timber, I figured I was giving them plenty of room and I am an experienced paddler, don't make a lot of noise.
If any of you know a guy who guides in that area from an 18' or so modified V with a Mariner motor, I would appreciate a PM. (He was wearing a "MUSKY" hoodie) Thanks

While I thought he was an idiot after my encounter, what really bothered me was when he didn't slow down for the group of kids coming into the landing where we had just taken out. Youngsters, maybe 13-14. They had been put in up river so they could paddle down the river. We speculated that because their kayaks were similar to some of ours in color, he didn't realize they were kids until he was alongside them. They were just the other side of a bridge with large concrete abutments, so his vision would have been somewhat obscured. And given that they were in shallow water waiting turn at landing, they really got rocked. Grabbing the sides of kayaks and canoes for balance, etc. There was a family that was waiting to launch an18' Crestliner fishing boat and they were stunned by how fast the guy went past the group of kids as well.

And yes I fish out of my kayak. Even hooked a musky last year while trolling a top water from one spot to the other. Came with a canon rod holder and that was what I was using. Unfortunately, I was so surprised, never set the hook and lost it at the kayak. Mainly I pan fish. Harder for me to screw up with those. Few things more peaceful than paddling into a weed bed and catching some gills and crappies from a kayak. One guy that normally goes with us often brings an ultra light and casts at likely spots. Last trip on the Wisconsin, he caught a couple nice smallies, the last of which snapped the tip of his rod when he went to hand land it.
