I have smashed the tip eye on a 8' heavy TDR trolling rod, can anyone suggest the right size or which one to buy? Would like to fix it and keep as a spare....

If you can, heat the current tip top lightly with constant pressure to pull the tip top off. Once off, just measure with calipers for the OD. You may need to clean the tip of the blank. Mudhole has a ton of "barrel" type tip tops you can buy and they list eh ID for the tube.

A bit OT question
Just got some 9' TDR rods for way cheaper then the 8'
Can I cut them down and just put on new tip?
I presume the old will not fit since the blank is tapered?

Thanks

Yes you can but you will increase the stiffness of the rod some to a LOT depending on how much you cut it down. When you are done you will have a stiff rod for sure.
